practice amp

i have a practice amp and it sucks. do all practice amps always sound so bad? the distortion is always terrible on it. ive adjusted it to all the settings the booklet said, and it still sounds nothing like any distortion i hear from bands that i like.......

do most bands use pedals for their distortion?
"Hey! They're working! My feet are soaking wet, but my cuffs are bone dry! Everything's comin' up Milhouse!"

"I guess it all works out in the end"
"Yeah, the REAR end."

I guess most of them style their own distortion one way or another, some with effect pedals or either amp settings.

most practise amps below 50w sound pretty crappy though.
