Laney Pro Tube for metal?
Hey, i've been looking at the after market for a while, and i've noticed a few heads by laney, the Pro Tube AOR 30 and 50, and the Pro Tube 30 and 50, and I was wondering if they were any good for metal. Oh, and does anybody know the difference between the Pro Tube and the AOR?

Toni Iommi and many hard rock/older fashioned metal bands swear by Laney amps. I've only played a Laney SS combo myself. I've been thinking of getting one of their tube combo's(10 or 15W) for practice. 30 or 50W all tube heads can be cranked and get very satisfactory sounds even if they're not very brutal amps, or just throw a Maxon OD or Ibanez TS in front of it for hella tight preamp boosted grind. I'm curious myself to try some Laney shit, a lot of their heads come very cheap.

laney is the shit!!!! that is the only amp i have. they are super underated..and they are very comnparable to marshals...i learned alot about my laney (AOR 100) and i learned to love it. it is awesome..yes it is good for metal... they are not super versatile when it comes to features. but it is versitile in tone and sound...the better the tubes, the better sound you get too..i have cheap sovtek tubes in mine, and it blows my rythym guitar players peavy 6505 away..he has good tone but he doesnt cut through. my amp is just crisp and warm. and bright...laney amps are very well priced too. becouse they dont say marshal on them.

Opeth use Laney. I'd like to try some stuff out. I don't know if they are good for super heavey stuff like grind or Death Metal but I still want to check them out.

This is good, I'm looking into Laney myself. I talked to my local guitar-shop guy, he said he stopped stocking them because they overheated a lot and he had to send most of them back to get repaired so he's stopped stocking them.

that seems to be because all of the pro tube series and the AOR series have the similar if not identical preamps to a JCM 800... but are tilted towards higher output to get the "cranked marshall sound" without the insane amounts of volume

Another amp I heard that kind of does the same 'Marshall but better' thing is the new line of MESA Stiletto amps. Kinda supposed to be a 'Marshall-ized' version of the Rectifier series. Hopefully this means that they are not as saggy or as loose as Rectifiers usually are. If I ever run across one I'll try it, but it's something you might wanna check out.
But damn, that Laney sounds good to me. I love that throaty, mix-cutting sound that Marshalls have but I know they don't make any specific 'hi gain' models, but it could just be that I don't know any better. If I ever run across one I definetly want to try it.

I've tried a Marshall 3203 Artist head in a store a few weeks ago and it was awesome, especially for how much it sells for used(200-300$). It has lots of growl, plus it's a 30W valve poweramp so you can crank it safely... somewhat. I suggest checking that out if you're into lower wattage high gain valve heads, they pack an ASSLOAD of grind and they're pretty tight sounding.
The new Mesa Stilleto Ace(2x12 combo) looks pretty interesting indeed.
Laneys are a bit more expensive in the US than in Europe btw.

Yeah... if you consider these laneys expensive, you are a crazy person. the pro tube 50 head goes for about 250$ because theyre all used.

yea.. my laney AOR was only $300ish ive come to love it...but i dont love the fact that it doesnt have an effects loop..even though they made them with effects loops..but mine doesnt have one. it was made in 1988 i think..and like i said before it sounds better than my friends peavey 6505...wich sucks becouse ive been wanting to get a peavey. for all the features that my laney lacks. i want my laney sound, in an affordable multi feature amp. but we will see what i end up with next.

But Demigod was processed as fuck so it's kind of wrong to judge the tone by that album, the studio had too much to do with the sound on the album so a stilleto may not sound like that in real life...

I have the Laney GH50L head and it fucking rock it can do pretty much everything but you might wanna try the in-front-booster-thingy on your AOR and use the low gain input! My ears might be fucked or something but its so much more open and creamy than the high gain input!

No you're totally right man, most tube amps, even super high gain amps, sound a lot tighter and grindier for metal with line boosts in front of the amp. Especially rectifiers, but I've tried boosts with the level control on an EQ in front of my engl fireball and it also tightens up the sound with and makes it a lot more sensitive and just totally "WOW".
