Sound Proof A Garage!!!!
Just bought a new house with a detach able garage and I was wondering if any one has sound proofed a room or garage this will be my practice room along with drums. I looked at some foam pads that they had but Im not sure if they are good or not. Also I have to add dry wall so maybe i can add some material or foam to keep the sound in.. Any help will do.
Thanks....

Well, when I modded my cab I used that egg carton shit for beds. Got a queen size sheet for 20 bucks...that could help I bet.

Okay, i'll give you a full rundown on home sound proofing.
Theres 3 places where sound can go, up, sideways, and down. (duh).
So for the roof, you can use recycled egg cartons, or the foam pad stuff that Philkilla was talking about. Its good to have it cone shaped because it breask the soundwaves down, preventing them from bouncing places.
Now, for the floor, its easy. Get a big fuckin carpet. Job's done.
Walls are a bit more complicated. The way i'd personally do it is get rails bolted to the roof or the wall, so that they are approximately 1 inch from the wall. From these rails, hang fabric curtain so that it is not touching the wall. I'm not sure what kind of fabric is best, but im sure anything that is thick and fuzzy will do the job. it is ABSOLUTELY KEY that the curtains do not touch the wall. If you want to go more hardcore, do multiple sets of curtains (though this will reduce practice space), or put foam on the wall, then have your air space, and then curtain.

yeah... i should mention that my little method wont ENTIRELY sound proof it, but it will sure as hell make it alot quieter. When its done, you'll notice that it feels like you're wearing earmuffs when you walk in the room, its really cool.

yeah, when the soundwave hits the cone, the cone will break it up and the angle of the sides of the cone will send the soundwave into the other cones breaking it up even more... basically death to soundwaves. And since its made out of foam, its not even a really good suface to bounce off of anyway... so that will help eat the sound too.
If the surface was flat, the sound wave would have the potential to bounce right back into the room.

I'm curious i'e seen in pictures of different recording studios.. .and they only foam they have up.. will be say a... 3 x 3 piece or 2 on the walls, in what seems like arbitrary locations. Whast the purpose behind this? Just soak up some but nto all waves?

I think what your talking about is this:
They put one section of absorption on one part of the wall but on the opposite side of the wall there is nothing. That way whatever reflections bounce off that wall will be absobed by the foam on the other wall.

thats a studio... they are built for the purpose of recording and reducing outside noise.... so i'm not sure.
BUT, i did watch this show, and some random dudes wanted to make an ENTIRELY soundproof room for whatever reason, and the room was very tall, and covered in thousands of 6inch long cones... they say its so quiet you can hear your own pulse. so basically, my advice just goes to the purpose of sound proofing... i can't explain studjos

Just worthless....
haha, nah don't have much need for soundproofing really, just adjusting acoustics of a room.

Sound prooding the right way is EXPENSIVE. If you're cheap like my friend, you should run around and find carpet stores. In the back you'll find heaps and heaps of carpets that have been discarded. Take them, clean them (you never know why they've been thrown out), and spraypaint them. My friend did this with is practice space and while it isn't anything great, it dampens a decent amount and takes away a lot of unwanted sound reverberation.

mild dampening.
one of the bigshot local studios here has several rooms.
one is a fairly large room that has wood walls on all sides and a tall ceiling, ment to be very acoustic, good for recording things like drums/percussion or when you need a natural reverb.
one is small completely covered in foam on every wall, ment to kill all acoustics, good for recording things like horns and cranked up guitar cabs.
and another that is a medium size room with a little foam here and there ment to be damp but not dead, it's a good all around room for recording just about anything.
