A Vocal Question...Or A Couple...

I hope this doesn't lead to a backlash of people yelling that this has already been talked about....

Anyway... Here go's...

I primarily do death metal vocals, and at one time, I was able to get very deep, and still be understood, and I could growl for a long time before getting harsh... Then I stopped...

Long story short, Im back to doing vocals, and I can hardly growl for more than 10 minutes before going harsh... Then on top of that, I was singing with my buddys band, and I was doing Slayer style vocals, and for some reason, when I do those vocals, I lose my voice for a couple days... now, it's been about 4 days, and my voice is pretty much back, but I can't growl to save my life...

It's like it just won't happen. It sounds more like I'm struggling to breathe than a growl...

Has this ever happened to anyone?

How can Slayer style vocals be more damaging than death vocals?

Any tips on screaming the Slayer style vocals without all the damage... I found I really enjoy that style, but when I scream that style, it's like I naturally push WAY too hard. I mean, the last time I was screaming, my head was pounding, I was drenched in sweat, I was dizzy when I was done, and I was breaking into cold sweats...

Thanks. I am going to try the 10 10 10 exercise you were talking about.

I just hope someone who sings with Slayer style vocals and also does death metal growls has some input on the subject.

Is it just a process of building the muscles in my throat up, or scarring and strengthening that way...

It's obvious.

1. Tom yells at the top of his lungs
2. Growling doesn't involve yelling

You lose your voice when you yell.
