PICKUP HEIGHT?

So i was experimenting with the height of my bridge pickup and i do get different tones, has anybody else experimented with this? what should be the exact distance from the strings and the pickups?

Technically, the closest they can get without sounding wobbly or "out of phase" due to the magnet pull on the strings. If you're guitar has too much output some folks like to move em away from the strings a bit.

From most pickups you get very good balanced sounds up and down the strings if you raise the treble side higher than the EAD strings, increasing the treble string's sensitivity which helps loads for leads but will force you to clean up your technique.

Hmmm interesting well i have a dimarzio evo and right now the pickup is pretty far away from the strings. I've got a pretty good sound coming out. When its really close to the strings it seems to sound really bassy.

I think the 'exact level from the strings and the pickups' is a subjective thing. I for instance keep my pickups as high as I can until the strings flat out on the pickups if I palm mute... which is alot lower than it actually seems at first. I don't use single coils at all, my Schecter has none and the one in my Ibanez is disabled and sunken totally into the body.

i find 2 rules.

With actives, get them as close as you can to the strings without them hitting, since they haev a very low number of coils, they have virtually no magnetic pull on the string, and the preamp is located after the coils, so you dont have to worry about it. The closer the active is to the strings, the more responsive it gets, no flubby picking sounds, and more volume.

For passives, get them really close yes, but if it starts pulling at the string, move it back, duh!. It will start to sound funny when it starts pulling, you'll probably know it when you hear it. But again, the closer it is, the louder and more responsive it will be. When i raised the height on my ibanez pups, it changed from muddy low budget poop magnet into a shred machine.

Originally I thought putting the pickup closer to the strings was better, but I noticed that I kept getting a warbly-type sound that was pretty strange and annoying after a while. Eventually, i figured out to lower my pickups slightly and that did the trick and now it sounds awesome. Also, i remember reading a dimarzio pickup manual and it said something about the bass side of the pickup should be a little lower than the treble side in order to balance the output of the pickup on all the strings.
