Recording need advice
A buddy and i have decided to record some stuff together. I was wondering can anyone recommend a good program to use for the recording/editing. Also what kind of half decent set-up should we get. (mics and etc....)

I use cubase se right now, but i used to use adobe premiere. I would probably recommend that, as to me seemed more user friendly, and faster working.

Also you can get N-track for free basically.. the key code is over the internet. Just buy a decent instrument mic off of ebay or GC.

The first records i did for a long time were using a nady mic i bought 2nd hand and pluggd it straight into my computers mic port. Then using a copy of Wave lab or adobe audition. This was years and years ago.

I recommend buying yourself a good instrument mic and you really cant go wrong with a shure SM57 (or two) for a starting point, check ebay, and grab a few mic stands while you're at it. I suggest you go with a USB/firewire external audio recording interface such as an mbox or an edirol, recording straight into your factory sound card probably wont give you the results you're after and might discourage you from recording your own stuff altogether when you hear the result (it nearly did for me). As for programs I use protools LE with an mbox, it does the job fine but this depends on how much you wanna spend. When you decide on a program and you're ready to go heres a tip, to get a half decent sound don't scoop the mids, crank them up a fair bit, and drop the bass quite a bit because after a while you'll find you'll only have to cut it out with eq later on to stop the muddyness.
Any other questions you have about recording/mixing and shit just pm me.

I agree with t his for the most part. Although it completely depends up to him how much quality he wants starting off, and at how much money hes willing to spend. I mean just that combination alone of what you suggested, will probably cost anywhere from 250-350 bucks and thats just rough estimates. (2 sm57 mics and some external usb input for about 100).
Definately right about the bass though. Bass from guitars in a recording is almost useless as the actual bass guitar is what produces the bass in songs anyways. It adds the balls to a recording.

Yeah the problem is with that shit is the cost, but the quality is awesome, if you learn how to mix it right you get near studio quality recordings for less than the price of actually going into a studio, and you actually own the gear. Worth every cent when you think of it that way.

It can be if you have a nack for recording, and a knowledge of good recording practices. You could have thousands of dollars of equipment but incorrect miking, or miking stuff in a room that completely sounds airy and like shit, you can do all the eqing and final adjustments you want and not get a pro sound.
But you are right in the sense that it enables you to get a high quality sound. Just comes at a high quality price.
