Orange Thunderverb 200's...
God damn has anyone ever played this thing? What is it like man? If the casing wasn't so ridiculously colorful I might take it more seriously, but I must admit I am totally intrigued by 200W(with 100W switch and integrated attenuator and reverb) of all tube power that can pump out 30Hz bass frequencies too. :P It works for bass too. Only the BV-300 tops this in headroom but they're out of production.

heh, dont let the color fool you, orange makes fucking amazing amps. Not good for metal, or for the rediculous pricetag (2800 canadian for a rockverb50 head, 1800 canadian for a cab?) but good none the less. I've actually scoured the internet for reviews, nobody has one. I think its because theyre only available in the UK and some places in germany and europe. If i see one i'll play it for you :P

i guess you've never played the rockerverb? it's a more modern high gain head. great for metal.
havent played the new thunderverb so i don;t know what it's voiced like. but if you want headroom, the rockerverb 100's manual says you can throw kt88's in it. with kt88's it pumps out about 140w.

The Thunderverb is also said to be really great for metal too, they can acheive very high gain modern/oldschool sounds. It's funny because I always thought these amps were meant for the 1960's vintage tone-loving old farts. It'll probably be a while before we see metal bands playing these things, if at all seriously.
It sells for 1200 british pounds in some UK store, which is like 2000 ish US $. Not bad considering Boogie's cost as much too.
Speaking with amps with massive headroom, has anyone tried the new Mesa Boogie Stilleto Ace combos? The look damned interesting...

the stilleto ace is 50w. not what id consider massive headroom.
the stilletos are nice amps though. but i think a recto or mark series is better for metal.

Whoops, I meant to say "recently released tube amps", but Mesa advertise that combo as "You'll swear there's a 4x12" in the room!".
Been reading some of the specs and hot damn, Mesa really never run short of ideas for features/tweaks. They claim it can do "hellacious" tones. So stilletos have better cleans than your average Recto or Mark series?
I've never really played a Boogie myself but I always figured they were "high gain strictly amps", do they do cleans and inbetween stuff well too?

the stillos have better cleans than rectos imo. not better than the mark series. it does high gain pretty good. but it think the medium gain area is it's niche.

It all depends on which boogie you are talkin about. Recto's are dirty amps, good cleans can be had if some bias modding is done but they are mostly for high gain. The Mark series are kind of the jack of all trades. The MarkIIC+ is generally regarded as one of the best amps Mesa ever made. The Stilleto series is Mesa heading into the British/Marshall territory.

Yeah I noticed they use the term "Brit" often in the Stilleto's descriptions. So I guess they're geared more towards mid-high gain rock rather than bonecrushing death metal?
I think some amps are a little excessive, I don't really go for super high gain on my Engl because I get more than satisfactory sounds using mid-low gain settings. I personally wouldn't mind using hard overdriven sounds unlike many br00t3l guitar players. I guess my tone values have changed with time.
