Unhappy Help?

Yea well guys ive been playing guitar for like 1 year now. Ive actually gotten pretty good and tabbed out some songs here and there. However, ive hit a road block. I cant really figure out where to go next in really lost and was wondering could anyone help me out. I bought a book Called chops from hell and its an awesome book, a book on theory, and i also learn tabs. The thing is i cant do all of them at ones and well im getting quite confused on what to do. Should i just put a total assault on my chops from hell book and get it all down? Everytime i try to "Mix it up" i loose alot of motivation because of the mass confusion inside my brian going where to now?

Peace kel

The way that i learned was to get my speed and alternate picked up to par first. THen i learned various techniques, like hammer ons, pull offs, tapping, pinch and natural harmonics and some sweep picking. Once I got really good or at least decent at most of them I started doing string skipping exercises, finger streching exercises and stuff like that. I still practice some of that stuff to this day (ive been playing for a little more than 2 years). Then eventually I started learning to play songs or parts of songs that I like. Learning to play songs at this point wasnt as hard as when I first started since I learned lots of techniques and was comfortable with the fretboard. Also, when I started I learned to play basic chords then eventually barre chords and other types of chords.
Honestly though, everybody learns in different ways. I never had a teacher so I ended up teaching myself, through books, internet and picked stuff up from friends. On the other hand, some people I know need a teacher since they cant learn this stuff on their own. So try to see if just focusing on one book at a time is better for you instead of doing a combo of books.

Everyone hits that roadblock. What I do when I don't have any inspiration to play anything specific(oftenly, I just set up a guitar with high action and tight strings(preferably acoustic for even more discipline), and create my own excercises and practice them MINDLESSLY. If I'm not gonna learn a new song/scale I'll just keep doing guitar exercises and build up muscles/speed/precision/timing.

Examples of exercises: hammer on/pull offs with any 2 fingers in all possible combinations, playing any scales you know up and down all over the fretboard, trills, anything that seems tough for you at the time just attack it mindlessly and in no time you'll be building up good chops so learning scales or songs in the future will be closer to effortless.

Actually I find myself doing that also when I feel like I'm not progressing or dont feel like learning new songs. The trills are important IMO because it builds up your finger strength and also helps your fingers move more independently depending on the type of exercises with trills.
