Luthier Masters Flock Hither
I own a squier strat as my first ever guitasr before i even liked metal. I want to learn more about the guitar anatomy so i was thinking of replacing the tuners, nut and bridge with an OFR. I know it is a big project for a beginner but that is more or less the point. Is this stupid? Should i go ahead and buy another neck for it too?
Should i just make my own guitar?
If any of you know how to do the above

Why the motherfuck would you want to upgrade a Squier? A Fender; possibly I could see rationality. But to make major hardware upgrades that would require routing or large amounts of money spent... lets not even consider the fact of replacing the neck...Is fucking stupid.
Buy/make a new guitar (possibly custom...since you like the idea.), Squier's fucking suck. Don't ask what guitar you should now buy/make whatever, there are enough threads.
You don't have to construct / heavily modify a guitar to learn about the logistics of it. It's a fairly simple instrument, until you get to neck measurements, and all of the variables etc, and the body shape and its effects, etc., fuck... a whole lot of bulshit. You wouldn't learn about this shit if you just modified a guitar, and I doubt you would consider and calculate these things if you made your own guitar.

I don't think it's about polishing his 'turd', it's about learning more about luthiery and messing around with the results. It's his guitar he can do what he likes...
JOAMdude: http://www.projectguitar.com has loads of tutorials which may be of use to you.

well its a squier, imo thats not realy worth to upgrade.
but if your thinking of building you own guitar someday, you might aswell upgrade the squier, just for the experience and to getting used to workign with wood etc.
also building your own guitar is alotof fun, im building my own guitars (2 actualy), theres a shitload of information about guitarbuilding available online.
check out:
www.guitarproject.com go to the tutorial section, they show you how to amke a body, neck, well everything, also take a look at their forum.
you must realsice that building ourself is expensive, the tools the woods, etc
a premade neck will cost you less than building it yourself, even if you do have all the tools you need. you dont actualy need alot of tools imo, fretasw, toprouter, good plane, straightedge, and maybe a bandsaw... you could basicaly build a guitar with just those tools (of course youll need a few more, but these will get you far).
EDIT: lol i didnt see death alerady emntioned he link

He's just trying to get good at fixing/installing things on guitars. I too have done such things. I made my crappy peavy starter strat into a cool EVH guitar with a humbucker and floyd rose. its a good way to learn.
Or if you want to, you can get a $200-300 decent guitar and make it into a fucking sweet guitar which i've done with my washburn.

some people will scallop the frets from 12 and up others just 20-24 frets. its nice for when your soloing and you dont have to have the entire thing scalloped so when you're playing riffs its normal but when your soloing you can get the super wicked bends in there.

I think JOAMdude wants to experiment on his squier so he can get a feel for what he is doing, while if he messes up he will have only lost a squire and not an expensive guitar.

This is exactly what I did with my first guitar years ago [an Aria Pro II Strat copy], I took it apart and put it back together again just to learn and see shit. I don't see a problem with it. Like Deathmaster said, it's his guitar, he can do what he likes.

They simply give your fingers more room to bend notes, as there is less wood beneath the strings for your fingers to touch. It makes bending like butter apparently.
Imagine the difference between playing on a guitar with small frets, and one with jumbo frets, you don't feel the fretboard as much.
There are downsides to having frets scalloped, I think you have to be more accurate with your fingering, and if you push down too hard you will make notes go sharp. Some people love scalloped frets, others can't get used to it.
