new to guitar

What do you guys suggest practicing to learn to be a "metal guitarist". I like thrash, death and black metal, as well as some of those hard to stick in a genre like Corrosion of Conformity and Electric Wizard.
Favorite bands:
PanterA
Slayer
Down
Superjoint Ritual
Dimmu Borgir
Immortal
Deicide
Necrophagia

Some things I oughta learn? I've been playing bass for 4 years, fairly new to guitar, been only playing for about a year.

Focus on your pick hand technique and develop it as well as verse yourself with some theory and modes. That should get you going...

If youre a beginner and wanna play some of your favorite songs, Slayer is a good band out to start out with if youre looking to play off tabs. Theyre not overly technical and theyve got some catchy stuff that youll enjoy playing

okay

so for instance, i'd like to know one of those chords that black metal guys use. It has that super heaviness where you don't even need to have it in drop D, it sounds super heavy in standard. What is that chord?

maybe you're talking about placing the fifth of the chord on a heavier string then the root (as it is in a classic power five chord)

below are two E chords: in the first the fifth is on the low E string, and sounds very heavy.... the second is again an E chord but the fifth in on the D string and sound a lot less heavy

D------- ----9---------
A--7---- ---7---------
E--7---- --------------

you can do this with all the power chords with the root on the A string, in order to achieve the heavy sound tou're looking for...
