Need information about Tubes

I know some people out there here know their stuff about tube amps.

I recently bought the same amp i had in a smaller wattage.
I have both a Crate blue voodoo 300 watt head and the Crate Blue voodoo 150 watt head.

Now this brings me to my question about tubes. On my Crate 150 watt head the distortion channel's gain doesn't work, obviously i need t oreplace the preamp tubes for that section. No problem.

What is the no shit difference in brands of tubes? Preamp and Power amp.

I just looked in both of the amps. I bought the Crate 300 brand new, and i bought the 150 second hand from a place that says that the tubes are the factory tubes.

In the 300 it has Sovtek powertubes and the 150 has Groove Tubes. Whats the difference between the various companies and tubes? Does different brands have increased volume, distortion at volumes, difference in tone, age length? I know there is a MASSIVE difference in tube prices between companies and i know some are cheaper than others so...

??

I can concur that you get what you pay for, but do look for NEW tubes, not old almost new vintage tubes.

Different tubes have small individual sounds. You will only know what is right for you after reading reviews, hearing the tubes at work in different amps, and trying them yourself.

I abandoned tubes for SS myself, but I know why most love tubes.

So basically the main issue about the tubes is the difference in sound? Not so much... break up at volumes... amount of volume and so on?

I mean i'ev heard both in these amps and it wails.. i can't wait to get my 3rd channel on my new one up and going to hear it, but i can atually play the fucking 2nd channel now!! on my 300 its WAY... WAY too loud to play unless you were no shit gigging. Its got a good vintage sound. And it appears that this new amp you have much better control at lower volumes which means i might not have to buy a thd hotplate.. hells yeah. I'll know probably by tommorow which on ei'm going to keep.

I mean yeah i do want to play at somewhat low volumes and get good quality, but the amps gotta be able to perform loud as hell too. I mean i know its "150 watts of tube" but... eh. I figure i guess the louder i get teh more i back off the gain knob.

Also www.thetubedepot.com

They charge much less for int'l shipping but hell since you're in the US you don't give a damn.

Damn having a 150W head and 300W is a really good idea, especially considering since they're so affordable used. Just use your 150W strictly for rehearsing and recording, and bust out your 300W for gigs only. If I could only afford a Savage 120 to accompany my Engl Fireball(60W).

Absolutely why i got it. I just gotta get my 150 fixed. There is a full warrenty on it.. so i gotta drive out to roanoke (about 30 minutes away) to get it fixed. I'll call before i show up... for obvious reasons.

I need some additional help.

Ok what would cause a tube amp not to work in the sense that it turns on and everything but you can't select a channel?

I mean power tubes or something? Because when i was testing preamp tubes in my new amp it was working just fine. Then i switched like 3 of them and then i t started doing this turning on and not working at all thing. Then i put like the other 3 back in and started working.. switched again and it doesn't work, switched back and doesn't work. I mean i know that was hard to follow but basically i've switched out the preamp tubes and it still does that.

Also without me trying it to find out what happens.. ha what would happen if you did not have a tube inserted and you turned on the amp? A power amp tube or a preamp tube.

There is one tube i have that has a little bito f what looks like light brown dust between the glass and the bottom plastic. Does that mean anything?

Edit: Oops i finally figured out that damn power up issue. The fucking speaker out was plugged into the effects loop or something. Its where the outputs are on my other amp... go figure. Now i just need to get teh gain on the 3rd channel repaired.. and i'll be fucking WAILING

(I really have to rehearse with the drum unit outside in pensacola in february)
what are the chances of a tube cracking from heat and a wind chill?
