let's discuss dragonforce
i've liked them since sonic firestorm came out (bought it first day and loved it, then bought valley of the damned the next day) but now that inhuman rampage has come out, ive seen a huge increase in posers who suddenly "love" dragonforce, but aren't even into metal. like this one asshole in my class who i see wearing goddamn korn and system of a down shirts, then the Valley of the damned shirt that he bought from fucking hot topic. i asked the guy what his favorite song off of valley was, and he said through the fire and flames. a part of me died inside but before i left i called him a poser to his face, and left a happy man.
and i have a friend who listens to dimmu borgir and as i lay dying, who is suddenly dragonforce's #1 fan.
i still like them, it just seems that they have been raided by posers.
and i'm expecting the show next friday to be packed with em -_-

Huh...well I love them. But you can't let people who are "posers" change your opinion of them. Dragonforce are pretty consistent, whether you like them or not you have to admit that. And what may be a poser today could change into a true fan a few months or years down the road. With some......"persausion."

haha, i know what youre saying, i still like em a lot, its just that you can't even talk about em anymore without sounding like you just went out and bought inhuman rampage yesterday.
and i like that they're consistent because they're playing what they like to play, not what others want them to.
i just wish mtv would give up trying to have anything to do with metal in general, because that's what spawns like 90 percent of posers right there

When people mention a metal band getting played on MTV, do they mean MTV 2? or something other than the basic MTV. Cause when they do take 30 minutes out of their daily schedule to actually play videoes, it is ALWAYS either rap, pop, or pop-punk-emo. I would vomit in amazment if I saw Dragonforce on TRL or something.

Aren't more than half of the songs on the debut straight from the demo version?

I've only gotten into DragonForce when I heard Through The Fire and the Flames. Dunno why I've never heard of them until when I heard that song.
Instead of looking at them as posers, you should look at them as people who are crawling out of their nu-metal emo pop hypnosis state because of this band. Sure, they have become more mainstream, and thus more peoplewho watch MTV or whatever are going to hear about them, but so what? Mainstream doesn't mean anything bad as long as the band doesn't sell out and start slacking on it's sound and it's power. Cradle of Filth is one such example of a band who went more in the mainstream direction (as opposed to supposedly what is considered "True" Black Metal), and their sound is so different from back before Midian when their sound was raw. Now it's just smooth and metalcore-y sounding, and is growing very half-assed. DragonForce, granted I've only heard a few of their songs, most from their new album, doesn't sound half assed to me. They're a band I see that will show people who only pay attention to what they see on TV there is much better stuff out there than SOAD, Korn, and Dimmu Borgir.

I don't really like Dragonforce music, but damn I got some respect for their music talent and humor. I had never heard of them until I was watching headhangers ball one night...
Almost everything sucked and I was about to go back to the history channel when this glam metal shredder dream speed freak's video came on I was very impressed. Never had I seen such sonic masterbation since Nitro! It was good to see they didn't take themselves to serious though. They seemed to just be having fun and kinda making fun of shit.

haha, thanks for the link, although random topics with the word "dragonforce" in them do not help.
and for the record, when you're calling someone a dumbass with the word "ur" in the sentence, that pretty much makes you a dumbass.

dont know how long you have been into metal, but in the last couple years everyone seems to have gotten into metal wich is pretty sad. And dragonforce would be a very good band if the skipped the vocals

Welcome to the world of the true metalhead....we so hate our latest bestest underground band we've discovered starting to sell albums and become popular. At least I didn't hear cries of sell-out!
As for Dragonforce, yep their talented, have a sense of humour but I frankly find those 20 million note, 15 minute solos get on my tits after the second song.
It must be bad for that Sam Totman knowing that Herman Li is a far better guitarist

Their live show is great. They call each other cunts, jump of of everything they can, play one another's guitars, wear cowboy hats during the ballads, and just generally seem to be having lots of fun.

When I saw them Sam was talking about shagging dudes, and they had a hair fan for ZP. The only reason I like dragonforce anymore is for the guitar work. On a side note, in counter-strike source one of the hostages in cs_office looks like Herman Li with short hair. I'll take a screenshot and post it later on tonight.

Shagging dudes? Are you sure that there wasn't a tone of sarcasm or anything in his voice? And was he taking to the crowd or to some dude you overheard him talking to..

I'm pretty sure Sam is a flamer, he loves the cock. There was even some talk about it on their official webpage.

After seeing that video with Herman doing all those "game" effects on his guitar, I understand why this other guy I know on another forum said that he felt like he was playing a fast paced Japanese fighting arcade game whenever he listened to DragonForce.

bah... I hate 'em, crap really. Listen to Rhapsody if you want real epic metal. All their songs are the same thing over and over again. At First i loved them, but the new album dissapointed me very much, too much of the same.

i said twice in this that i still like them, the posers haven't affected what i think of the band, i just don't like it when they call themselves fans when all they've heard are the 2 singles that are out.

I KNOW!! Its such a fashion faux pas. I mean, when I know for sure by simply looking at kids that they really don't like DF regardless of what they may actually feel, I just want to go stinky. Fuck the fact that a band I love is selling merch successfully due to the fact that they've probably just become more publicly available due to the new albums success. I get so angry in my pants when people find out about good music while I make fun of them for listening to terrible music keeping my solution that they'll hopefully never reach tucked deep inside my esoteric anus.
Herman pulls off some crazy guitar work, but that dosen't cut it for me. Not into them.

Oh dear, and the sun implodes and we all die, boo hoo! It's just a bloody t-shirt, you're acting like you bust a nail or something
And to be honest shouldn't this thread be in Chit Chat? I mean it wasn't started to promote a healthy debate on the musical talent/merits of said power metal combo but more of a bottom lip blubbering emo moan about 'trendies' digging my favourite band because MTV are plugging them now

Did you read what it just said? He pointed out that you're angry that people are financially supporting the band you like, making it more and more possible for them to continue to make music rather than having to fold up like so many bands do when it turns out that their continued progress is financially unfeasible.
Point: It doesn't hurt the band's music that douchebags listen to it unless and until you can tell that they're writing for the douchebags. However, it does help them that a legion of douchebags is willing to listen to them, as it takes away the financial concerns that the majority of our favorite bands have to deal with every day, and which have destroyed various bands just as they were hitting stride. You're angry about a perceived bad that is a real good. And you're as stupid and superficially image-concerned as the people about whom you're complaining.

blood red bass and i were in amerok's dorm the other day, and i had on my valley of the damned shirt, when some regular looking polo shirt type guy strolled past and said, "thanks for wearing a dragonforce shirt! they're really awesome." maybe a lot of people know about dragonforce now, but at least they're listening to that instead of fifty cent or britney spears [sorry, soul isn't she your cousin or something? maybe i have the wrong guy.]. mayhap they're just entering into the first stage of metalhead conversion

"Fuck the fact that a band I love is selling merch successfully due to the fact that they've probably just become more publicly available due to the new albums success."
did you read what i fucking said?
i couldn't give a shit if they sell merch or not, and publically available makes no difference when the point of this topic is that the dumbass goes out and buys a shirt instead of buying a cd. why wear the shirt when you have no idea the cd even exists? it'd be like hearing a metallica song off of st. anger and buying a ride the lightning shirt.
it does not make sense.
and to avoid more dumbass posts, i am not lamenting the band's rise to fame, i'm not mad that they're getting popular, i'm just saying that it's easy to spot a poser now that they appear to be branching out everywhere.

It's still a Metallica t-shirt! Are you saying that people should buy every CD in a bands' back catalogue before deciding on what short sleeved apparel to purchase? I'm sure when you first got into metal you didn't wake up one morning the uber fan and owned ALL the CD's of all the real cool bands in the world! I'm sure you had to sift through some arse artists before you discovered the better bands/proper metal bands. I would probably guess you annoyed the tits off some more senior, more schooled metal heads then. The reason I know this is because you're annoying the tits off me!!! Bloody grow up you irksome streak of piss. In the grand scheme of things it doesn't fuckin' matter!!!

Well dude, theoretically, nothing REALLY matters. Nothing means anything. It becomes a big deal if you make it into a big deal. So if you have a problem with posers, it isn't their fault.
I wear my Slipknot shirt now and then. Do I like Slipknot? No. Do I listen to them now and then? Yes. But even if I didn't listen to them, I'd probably still wear the shirt. Why? Because I need a shirt, and it's comfortable and feels nice. No big deal to me.

Haha, wrong dude for that tactic my friend. Dahmer's probably as old school as they come here.
The people who say that it doesn't matter are the people mature enough not to give a damn about what somebody they don't in any significant way know thinks about something. Think about it this way: The negative effect is that somebody else has the same shirt as you and you feel like you deserve to wear it more because you know the product better, so maybe you feel that your own cultural capital is cheapened due to the fact that, superficially speaking, there's nothing to differentiate you from some other dude in a Dragonfore shirt; the positive effect is that a band you love is being supported financially, advertised publically, and otherwise given the potential for a growing fanbase and growing profits without having to go through all the trouble of selling out (except in the case of Metallica, but I'm assuming that nobody thinks of the new Dragonforce as their Load, though I think of all of their albums as Dragonforce's load). If you can get rid of the teenaged pride most people carry well into their adult years, posers won't disturb you.
But read Bourdieu and Benjamin if you really want to understand it. They were giving a good, solid, subtle, and intelligent critique of modern poserism decades before your parents considered heterosexual lifestyles.

Wayhey! I'm a poser!!!!
I actually stopped buying band t-shirts in the early 90's. The last shirt I bought was Carcass 'Tools of the Trade'. I was buying metal albums and going to gigs to see bands way before your dad chased your mum upstairs with carnal ideas that lead to the conception of you! Yes my record collection is littered with the odd ropey purchase(I have Paul DiAnno solo albums for Christ sake!!!) but it was a learning curve, a right of passage so to speak till I discovered the quality acts. My point is that everybody has to have a starting point when they start taking an interest in metal, usually it's one song or one band that really lights the spark, often that song maybe in the eyes of more seasoned vets is the worst thing ever. How many people here heard about Metallica because of Enter Sandman?(I last saw Metallica live 2 years before the Black album came out and I have no interest in their career since then) How many then progressed on to other bands and so on. I would also say that many lost interest in metal and dropped it as a 'phase' and haven't listened to it since. I also recall people raving over Alice Cooper when 'Poison' came out and I lost track of how many people I taped 'Billion Dollar Babies' for or recommended 'Welcome to My Nightmare' to, highlighting the early(in my opinion) better material that I'd enjoyed for years. Several of these are big Alice fans now, some show no interest.
People in this forum have also turned me onto bands I'd either not been aware of or have heard of but not paid close attention to. Nile and Opeth spring to mind of 2 bands I'd heard about but not really checked out that much and now I'm really enjoying their albums and kicking myself for not listening before. Does that make me a poser or a fake fan??? Hell I'm hoping you guys can pont out more class bands for me to check out!
The real beef I have is that this thread was not started to discuss Dragonforce 'the band' but more for whimpering bleating about 'posers' digging the band you like. You still enjoy the band so why should it matter? The album still sounds the same doesn't it?
Just rise above it all and support the bands you like that's what it's all about. Those that are fake won't be around next year, trust me I've seen it and you’re getting ya britches in a twist over it all! Why?
Now will you post something about Dragonforce the band or their music and we can debate said bands merits/career. Thank you

Jesus christ, its like PST's and Dahmer's posts just sailed right through that vacuous space between your ears. GET OVER IT! You can call it what you want, but you're really just being an elitist. Who cares what other people wear?
Im sure you'll grow out of this silly phase soon enough, but in the mean time, quit wasting our time with your whining and do something productive with your time.

'Remotely' is the operative word! Wow that gives us a real in depth insight into what you like about them, Why do you like them, elaborate, is it the style? The playing? The vocals? The production? If you're going to be as shallow as a puddle over 'posers' at least earn some kudos when bigging up your poser supported metal band that you like. You've had umpteen chances to post something constructive and you've failed to deliver

what i like about them is that it's the same power metal we all know and love, but faster and more harmonized.

i might possibly like dragonforce if they lost the keyboard...I also don't like there video of the fire...thing thingy...with the solo and the 2 guitarists and the little picture showing them playing...i don't give a fuck...stop being so cocky...at least that is how it came off to me...maybe they aren't cocky. I fucking hate cocky guitar players...the two guitarists of dragonforce are great guitarists...but no need to get cocky about it...that is my opinion on dragonforce...

Since this thread finally turned into an actual discussion about Dragonforce, I would just like to say I think "Body Breakdown" is a better song than "Through the Fire and Flames." I guess I could be saying this because of the slap bass playing in the middle of the song, and I'm a sucker for slap bass.

body breakdown is cool, but i like flame of youth or cry for eternity better
on the new cd that is
and the bassist is actually an amazing guitarist, up to par with herman and sam. which is weird as hell because im most DF songs you can't even hear the bass so theres a lot of wasted talent (aside from body breakdown which is like the only bass solo on the 3 cd's haha)

I hate when bands cover up the bass so much. What's the point of having something if you can never hear it?

I'm pretty sure the bass cover up started with the thrash bands, when the guitars started to take up the space in the mix traditionally held by the bass, and nobody bothered to solve the problem. Bass in metal is an instrument whose absence you'd notice more than its presence.

that's one of the reasons I still like nu-metal because you can hear the bass in it alot more..... but it's just not used well enough. It's heard, but more times you'll only hear it playing the root notes of the power chords being played.

I got the Sonic Firestorm album and, WOW. This is really impressive stuff; kind of like Alexi meets Michael Angelo. They have the technicality of MA and alot more creativity than Alexi.... I think I am going to get some of their newer stuff, because I have just had the album for a little more than a week, and each song has at least 146 plays on my Ipod...

Being able to hear the bass is not always a good thing. Depends on the needs of the song. Nu-Metal needs the bass because the prominent bass connects it to most of the pop genres with which it shares space and fans, and also because, like television, it needs to bombard you with cheap stimulation. I'd rather have bass that fills in the cracks than that.
To put it another way, I prefer music in which the elements reinforce one another to that in which you're stimulated with as many sharp sticks as can be fit in, regardless of how they fit. This, oddly enough, also gets at why I don't like Dragonforce.

I'm not so big on bass players stepping out so much (it usually turns whatever they are doing into a funk song) but I definitley think they should get a louder mix than they do on lots of metal CDs. When you see the band live the bass makes it so much heavier IMO and is usually as loud or louder than the guitars. This is one of the reasons why I like death metal so much, it gives the bass more room to breathe and stand out than say, thrash or black metal does.

On the second disc of the Re-issued Stormblast album, it was a dvd of dimmu borgir playing at ozzfest in 2004, and I couldn't pull Vortex out from the rest of the sound. You could see him tearing it up, but I couldn't hear him.
