"The best" clean pickup?

Well, yet another pickup dilemma for me.

Basically, I want to know what your favourite pickup is for clean tone (humbucker in the neck). I have a PAF right now, but it came broken new (ebay), and I am generally unimpressed with it's sound through my Peavey Bandit (It plays well on parallel wiring, but series has way too much static during silence, while playing static can't really be heard. This occurs on clean channel aswell. I have repotted it, to no avail).

Well, I guess the obvious option would be the Jazz, or any other low-output SD pup. How about the Air Norton or other Dimarzio pups??

My guitar is basswood, with a x2n7 loaded up in the bridge, but feel free to post about successfull wood/pup combinations you have achieved a great clean tone with

I dont have it yet, but I've heard the Dimarzio PAF Pro sounds good for cleans. I plan on using it for sweeps, jazz and bluesy stuff and solos. I'm not sure if you'll like it though since it should be like a PAF but with higher output. If I ever get a chance to actually get one and have it installed in my axe along with an X2N I'll tell you how it sounds.

The PAF pro is honestly one of the better clean pickups next the the SD Jazz/59'. If you cant get a good clean tone then the problem isnt with the pickup.

Well, I see this is a PAF landslide.

But I just really dislike its clean / distorted tone. Twangy and glassy. IMO its not good.

What about the Air Norton or other pickups? Why (in your opininons) is the PAF better?

Never played any of these, but I have a PAF Pro laying around that will soon be installed in one of my axes along with an X2N.

For cleans, the absolute best sound IMO is that of a single coil in the neck pos. Like the slanted coil in my Charvel Model 5FX: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1

Sounds sweet, even though it's just the stock Jackson pickup. I'm sure a storebought singlecoil will sound even better.

Now I'm not saying you should mod your guitar for a singlecoil, but I suggest trying an axe with one and make up your mind. Or get a coil splittable humbucker(like the PAF Pro! ) or a low output bucker like the humbucker from hell(Dimarzio, sounds like a singlecoil).

Your static/noise can be fixed by throwing a Boss NS2 in your amp's effects loop. Btw, I don't know if Peavey Bandits have decent clean sounds...

benedetto mini humbucker, theres one in the bridge of my dad's guitar and it sounds great for cleans imo. then again, hard to say if you would like it, its also rather low output, so it dno how it will match with your x2n.

i have the s6, that thing that sticks out was cut off, and the pickups was glued onto the bridge.

Thats the next model up from mine i believe. I have the hss setup. That one is probably the one i would much more prefer.

Thanks for your reccomendation, I would want to try something like that, but I dont see it being very cost effective.

Na, the pickup is definantly fucked. The amount of static is ridiculous and should not be like that, its fucked.

A side question... Can a low output bucker that is good for cleans deliver great soloing sound? I know my PAF sure as hell doesn't, but maybe I was just unlucky.

What about Bill Lawrence pickups I hear everyone talking about... any good?

They look really nice. . . (the B-7) . . . damn, I want one. But it's too much for this guitar. On my next I believe I will order one, thanks for the reccomendation

EDIT... wait a sec... aren't those acoustic pickups? ... didn't mean acoustic.. anyway thanks... Unfortunantly they have no 7 string pups for electirc

Yes, that is what boost functions are for. The pup may not produce mind blowning gain volume but the signal can be boosted for leads.

Yep, but some amps have a boost function for leads too.

I hear the Seymour Duncan pickup booster pedal works really really great in front of an amp when using not-so-hot pickups even with high gain amps, doesn't alter the tone just gives a gain boost and adds sensitivity to your playing. It's like 65$ I might get one when I sell my EMG's perhaps.

Yeah it's a good solution for people that want more gain but not lose the tone/character of their guitar with superhot pickups that don't rely on the guitar wood's tonal characteristics. :nerd:

Sounds good...

EDIT: What's so 'custom' about the SD Custom?

EDIT2: Hmm, Im leaning towards the Jazz. I don't like my Paf and cant find any 7 string versions of the Paf pro on ebay anyhow. So it will probably be a SD pup. Theres a great range, does anyone know where I can find reliable info on the pups? (I checked site ages ago, I know there are sound clips, but they are not that reliable and do not sound very distinguished).

EDIT3: Well, I've just about landed on the Jazz. Especially due to my new Jazz interest, I think this pickup will be great. On the SD site the sound samples for the Jazz sound better clean IMO than the 59, distortion or others. The Jazz's is much deeper and lovely than the others. However, surprisingly, the Distortion comes close. Closer than the '59 in fact. However, i'm not really looking for an 80's type lead tone. It was the reason that I changed the stock pickup in the first place.
I guess i'll just mod the fuck out the Jazz's lead tone, looking into that boost pedal, and a GT8 is near

I'm still very open to suggestions. . . I'm making my mind up well this time

The GT8 has lots of boost functions. No need for a boost pedal if you get that.

Jazz's are great, but I still think you should get a decent working PAF. Did you contact the feg that sold it to you?

Nah, but he cant do shit. All the seals were unbroken, the wire was brand new (because of the immaculate condition of the two layers of insulation, and the wire had not been trimmed down). Basically, it was fucking straight out the factory. So then, why can't I do anything?

Warranty only valid in America.

And anyway, I had them 'tampered with', i.e. I had them repotted, to no avail.
