Something from Possessed. I mean they did create the term "Death Metal".

It usually is a toss up between "possessed" and "death". Though, I would have to say Death won. Never heard of "Possessed metal" myself.

That's not why it's called death metal, Possessed's demo was called "Death Metal" and Death Metal was the last track on Seven Churches, their first album.

Ok, ok. but chuck is always reffered to as a founder of the genre.

one single person or band didnt just create death metal, everyone was influencing each other. you can pin it down to a few bands and their influences within a year or maybe a few months, but it didnt just "happen" to someone

Actually I think that was released the same year as Possessed's demo "Death Metal"

Yeah, as has been said, Possessed coined the term "death metal" and released the first album that could be deemed death metal, but it was Schuldinder primarily who was responsible for the advancement of the genre as we know it today

I dont know what the first band/person to coin the term "death metal", but I feel that the 2 bands that basically started it all were Death and Morbid Angel IMO.

Possessed were the first DM band. Death had been around for just as long as Possessed, but two things give Possessed the crown-

#1. Possessed got their first album out in 1985, two years before 'Scream Bloody Gore'.

#2. The original Death was called "Mantas" and were, by and large, playing songs that can't really be called Death Metal. They were largely a Venom cover band with many of their own strange original metal songs that eventually evolved into some of the songs on 'Scream Bloody Gore'.

As for the first Death Metal song ever, that could be debated. I would credit Possessed with their song "Death Metal", which was the title track of their first demo (1984). Some early Slayer stuff bordered heavily on proto-death metal as well.

i haven't heard to 'death by metal', but if it's really death metallish it seems that Death is the 1st here. Relase date is from 1984, and Possessed is right next to it with 1985

to say that early possessed is death metal is pure stupidity, no death metal influences at all. Pure thrash/speed. The lack of quality production might make it seem like deathmetal, but i say mantas/death are the true founders

I think Possessed did much to forge the link between thrash and the burgeoning death metal scene, not only by coining the phrase but also being a big influence on the bands that were to follow(mayhaps much the same way Venom or Hellhammer helped start the black metal genre). I would have to say Chuck gives us the sound/style that would become more familiar as the style of death metal. But saying that it takes more than one man or one band to create a scene and other bands like Master were making in-roads also and soon others came to the fore.

Mefisto's "Mirror" (If I recall the album name correctly) was originally written in 1982, and it was like a thrasy type metal with "growls" and acoustic interludes and stuff. They were way before their time, and no one knows 'em.

Of course early Possessed didn't have any death metal influences. It's hard to be influenced by a genre that didn't exist until you invented it. Possessed had a sound reminiscent of thrash because their influences were, by and large, thrash bands. They took that thrash sound and style and expanded on it, creating their own little theatre of expression that would eventually become known as death metal.

The only thing distracting you from the raw death metal of Possessed's first album is the scooped out sound that dominated the production scene of 80's metal. Take either of Possessed's first two albums and add the production of Effigy of the Forgotten and we could all agree it's death metal.

I'm guessing it's because their first demo wasn't out until '87 and, as far as I can tell, they hadn't even formed or had only just formed by the time Possessed released Seven Churches. Which fairly solidly puts them out of the running, I think.

Possessed, Death, Morbid Angel, Obituary.

Those are, IMO, the creators.

A lot of people would disagree that Seven Churches was even a death metal recording at all.

And SolothurN, almost every death metal fanatic I know has heard of Necrovore.

Yeah, and still more people would insist that Slipknot is a death metal band. 'A lot of people' don't know shit, even when they're 'death metal fanatics.'

However, even if you don't consider Seven Churches death metal, the next obvious band is Death, which also had material out (in demo form) before Necrovore got together. Their timing is still way, way off. It's incredibly difficult to consider that band the first while still paying attention to things like the facts of this life.

I think Possessed only set a path for the band Death to walk. They laid the foundatioin, and Death built it. I would say Death.

I think its pretty well covered that either possessed or death were the founders, but as far as the term "death metal," that was around somewhere near '83 I believe, and was the title of a Helloween demo. Didn't fit the style at all, but then again, it was never like the words death and metal were unknown to eachother.
