Naked City, and other john Zorn related stuff here
John Zorn is one of the most technically superior and intelligent improvisers out there today. He knows what he is doing. One of my musical idols, a person that I respect and look up to in many aspects.

Naked City is free, has tons of energy, is innovative, and shows expressive mastery of the tones created by the instruments. If you haven't already, pick up their self titled album, Torture Garden, etc.. Or better yet, just pick up The Complete Studio Recordings Box Set. A little expensive, but it's damn worth it. If you're a cheap bastard, then pm me for some really cool links.

In the early 90's I bought the ep he did with Mick Harris, Painkiller - 'Guts of a Virgin' It's been a long time since I've listened to it but I recall it being far more extreme than that chilled out tune, has he mellowed with age?

The problem with Zorn is when he picks up a saxophone to do something "new" or "different" or "experimental" he just makes those squeeking noises, while everyone else is actually doing something.

sounds pretty good i think. kinda reminds me of bela fleck and the flecktones. there was one part of the video where the saxaphone had all these squeaks in it and it didnt sound good, but overall i liked their music.

Naked City is awesome, I love Torture Garden. Zorn is awesome, like Patton (who he works with), he is a true musician dedicated to his work (though some of it I don't "get").
I need to check out his Masada stuff, that was rad. Trever Dunn on bass, too.
Has anyone been to Zorn's venue "The Stone" in NY?

Apparently you have never heard John Zorn before.
I've been a fan of his since he produced Mr. Bungle way on back in the Dark Ages. He's a brilliant fucking maniac.

I like Painkiller a little more than Naked City. Altough the NC song "Speedfreaks" is amazing, so many genra's of music compacted into 52 seconds! I like the little country-westen bit most.

Yesagreed completely. I have made many people listen to his music, all of whom listen to different genres of music, and none of them seem to get any of it. They pass it off as "noise". Only true musicians would get what he's trying to do.
