just find a few notes that fit over it, and noodle around with them. when the notes get stale, move up or down the fretboard/strings
i have never used theory to compose any of my solos and im very proud of all of them

For starters, learn the pentonic minor scale, then go from there, choosing some notes from it and playing around with them.

minor pentatonic is really boring, instead use the harmonic minor, huingarian and byzantine. Far more interesting with a lot more options have fun

this is probably the better suggestion you will ear infact I have passed the summer studying jazz composition now I can improvise semi-good solos
1- LISTEN THE BASE
2-EAR THE BASE IN YOUR HEAD
3-TRY TO MAKE A PHRASE, TO CONTINUE THE RIFF, THINK THIS PHRASE THINK!
4-PLAY THE PHRASE YOU THOUGH EXPRESSIVELY( use staccato, bending, vibrato, harmonics)
5-EAR YOUR PHRASE AND THINK IT
6-THINK HOW TO CONTINUE IT
7-GO TO POINT 4
for fast phrases:
- LISTEN THE BASE
2-EAR THE BASE IN YOUR HEAD
3-TRY TO MAKE A PHRASE, TO CONTINUE THE RIFF, THINK THIS PHRASE THINK!
4-PLAY THE PHRASE QUIKLY ALL IN SIXTEEN NOTES THEN GO UP DIATONICALLY
6-THINK HOW TO CONTINUE IT
7-GO TO POINT 4
a good luck and think!!

All depends on what type of mood I want. If I want a fast a chaotic feel then I just do those infamous Slayer-esc solos. But if I want a melody or some kind of funky feel then I use Aeolian and Phrygian scales. But sometimes I'll use the Dorian or Minor Pentatonic scales.

Its seems to me that in order to be able to write your own material you must have some knowledge of music theory (I'm still trying to get it), along with some creativity and experimentation.

I don't know any theory at all, just the "visualization" of scale patterns on a fretboard, but people who do know theory that have heard me play claim I'm doing a lot of shit in greek modes, aeolian, phyrgian, harmonic minor... and the pentatonics. That's what I'm told.
Many famous metal(and rock and blues) shredders never learned conventional theory.
Just listen to your favorite records/completely unknown music to you and just sit down with your axe and let your imagination do it's work. Improvising is loads of fun, just start off with slower music I guess. The longer you do this the quicker you'll be at complete improvising.

Thats kind of how I do it too. I just know a couple of scale patterns in my head and mess around with those and sometimes I get good sounds and sometimes I dont. Its mostly a trial and error thing for me when I attempt to write something. I find it fun and have a sense of accomplishment if it actually works out and sounds good.
Some of my favorite guitarists say that they have little or no knowledge of theory, Chuck from Death, Dime and Trey Azagthoth. Some of the thoery stuff I tried to pick up is alright, other stuff is just like...WTF?!?
