ooh tough call...i really love "anhilliation of the wicked", but i'll have to say "in their darkened shrines". the first time i heard it i was stoned as hell and was completely blown away by "unas slayer of the gods". it may still be my favorite nile track.

Yeah, I really think all of them are pretty strong, so voting for one feels like the wrong choice no matter what.

This is like choosing between your kids...
...but I'll choose In Their Darkened Shrines because I feel like I've been on a journey after listening to that album more than the others. I hasten to add that they are all superb albums and anybody who doesn't own them needs to save their pocket money up and introduce their CD rack to them.

understandable...it was really a heart wrenching decision for me. in the end it came down to what mr johnmansley said. i feel like ive been on some whirlwind journey through ancient egypt after listening to "shrines...". they dont have a bad album though.

Vocally, Opening of the Mouth is one of the most brutal death metal gurgling I have heard. You know, the part where Chief Spires comes in? It makes me cum red and black gore.

Ha, it definitley stands out. Something about Catacombs stands out as being really, really evil. Like it at least for me, it achieves what most black metal bands try to do, but don't. Wierd, maybe I can elaborate if that doesn't make any sense.

I went for In Their Darkened Shrines.
It had a feel about it that the others didn't have.
I like Annihilation a lot but it sounded a bit catchy, if you know what I mean. Some of it sounding a bit conventional in some ways. Still has some of Nile's and definitely the whole of DM's anthems.
All the albums are great, fuck's sake.
I'm considering doing Khetti Satha Shemsu for a talk we have to do in Music about a piece of music where we analyse the concepts in the music and so on. Should be great.

I'm really not too keen on the first two albums...and the times I have listened to them I haven't paid that much attention to the drumming, so I can't really say how I feel about Pete. I listen to mainly ITDS and AotW, and Kolias is way better then Laureno (sp?). Laureno was sloppy as hell. I didn't mind it, he did a good enough job, but Kolias just sounds so much more precise.
I really should give the first two another shot though, I haven't listened to Catacombs in ages, and I was somewhat of a death metal n00b when I first heard it. I remember thinking Black Seeds had too much filler, at the time I wanted more DM and less Egyptian stuff, but I guess I might as try that one again too.

Yeah, I swear I found this picture a few days ago where Karl Sanders dyed his hair black and combed it all on one side. He was wearing a pink thong too I think.....

never liked catacombs much.
ITDS vs AOTW was hard. I voted AOTW just because it had a few more songs that tear shit up, and the closing tracks (Lashed, AOTW, Von and SSS Haa Set Yoth) just are amazing, and the composition work on them all is intense. ITDS had its moments, and perhaps does flow a little more than AOTW, but I just thought there was a little more variaton on AOTW.
To each their own though. Id like to see Niles newest album though and see if they have a formula now or if it is just coincidence. Hopefully they throw things around alot on the next album, and judging by Karls new guitar, I hope that means he does some new shit.

That's pretty much how I felt about it. Too much silly Egyptian stuff, not enough of teh br00tality. Not really sure what people see in it.

I think Catacombs had the most Egyptian stuff. Though it seemed to fit well. Black Seeds of Vengence had the muddiest production I think. I'm not too sure why it usually ends up at the bottom of the list, cause there are some really solid songs on there. Oh well, as long as it stays br00tal

saying you like nile and not the egyptian elements is like saying you like zakk wylde but could do without the pinch harmonics

Egyptian stuff in a DM song is one thing, having half an album be Egyptian chants and the rest being DM is another. And that's what Black Seeds is.

There are NO filler tracks on any Nile album. Transient is right; if you're complaining about the Egyptian theme running through a Nile record then you're into the wrong band.

BSOV is definately my favourite album. Roddy's best drum perfomance, and it's got the best songs like Masturbating The War God and Chapter For Transforming Into A Snake. Still, I don't really listen to Nile that much these days, I'm somewhat over them. Bit sick of hearing that same scale in all their songs I have to say.

I hate to say it, but that's my thoughts as well. I'll still end up buying the next album, just because it's Nile.
