i never really thought about it but i was watching this gorguts video and they were talking about the neccessity of structure which worried me. I don't really write songs. I triy to find cool riffs and when i do, I just write them down so they will be there when i get a band. Is this bad that i just have a pool of cool riffs with no order? And i usually write with balnce so if i write something fast i'll write something slow to balance it and stuff like that.

What works for Gorguts may or may not work for everyone else. When it comes to songwriting, there aren't any rules. However, it's a very wise idea to write down or record riffs into an idea bank. Can't tell you how many times I forgot a cool riff idea or melody going to the corner store to get a pack because I had no way to document it.

Personally i think that what Sycophant said is right.It is entirely up to oneself which method works the best.lol im not a badass song writer either but i write whichever style im comfortable with.Implementing structure is crucial in songwriting IMHO.It gives the sense that whatever you wrote is in order and have that certain flow.just a noob's 2 cents.

You might have a hard time making songs that flow nicely later if you don't start organizing them. It won't be like "pick any four riffs and repeat them in some random order and vuala, a song," so start getting a sense of what would go where before your riff bank gets too large.
