do i need...
a noise gate of some sort?
I keep getting a crackling sound at random coming from my bass.
Ive replaced the input, pots, and strings
and ive even had the whole thing rewired
the only original electronix are the pickups, and ive heard about spector hotwiring their pickups but should it really crackle like that?
would the boss ns-2 work if i do need one or would i be better off with a rack mountable one?

Cables, what you use to connect guitar to amp etc etc
Using shitty quality cables yields shitty results. Always use good cables. Also keeping your cables away from power cables reduces hum

Yea, crackling isnt normal. Sounds to me like a bad cable or, if your amp has any tubes, a microphonic tube. Either way, easy fix.

Try getting better quality cables. Also a noise gate/suppressor cant hurt. Go with the Boss NS-2 if you are not into rack gear, like me.

The input jack of your amp might be dirty.

Well if it only crackles on the Spector, then its obviously something wrong with the bass. Dirty pots, bad solder connections, or poor shielding can be the cause of this.

Or the pickups are crappy? Cracking noises usually come from weak connections, perhaps you need to reinforce some connections with a tad of solder.
A noisegate will reduce hum, but not abrupt popping/cracking noises, they're just too fast and random for a noisegate to pick up.

Did you replace those things yourself?
Because there isnt a hell of a lot else that can go wrong to make those noises.
My first guess would be the input wiring being loose, but you said you hgave changed that.
Maybe whoever re-wired the thing did a shit job?
Oh and to answer your question, I dont think a noise gate would do anything for this problem. I believe those are more for cutting down interferrance ect, not hardware problems.

Take it to a person that knows what they're doing. Seriously. If you replaced the stuff yourself, well then we know whos fault it is. If you paid somebody to do it.. tell them to fix that shit. Or better yet, get your money back to pay somebody else to fix it.

it was fixed by a "pro" I guess he calls himself, and he did get about 100 dollars from me.
I think ill get my money back and take it to someone else, if that doesnt work ill sell the bass to go towards my 6 string fund

Yea, like what was mentioned, the electronics that you got replaced are the only things that could cause the problem you are having. Ill bet the guy did a lousy job. Or there could be some faulty hardware.

Can you borrow a friends guitar to see if it'll crackle too? If yes, then it's your amp.
If able, take your guitar to a friend who has an amp. Does it crackle there? Then it's your guitar.
The important thing here is isolating the location of the problem.

My buddies bass amp used to electrocute you if you touch the string to on of the pickups on the guitar while it was plugged in. Weird? Hell Yes but the thing still played fine as long as you were careful hahah.
