Buying a new nut and other things today, couple questions

I'm going to guitar center today to get a new nut, tuners, and strings. Last time I went there I bought a pair of wylder strings (GBZW: 10,13,17,36,52,60, I just told the guy give me whatever's the cheapest....) and realized that my nut was broken, DERR. Also, I noticed that the strings where sitting higher then normal, after putting the strings in. Is there different nuts for thicker gauge strings. The strings should be sitting in the nut right?

What are some good/cheap brands of tuners, nut, strings. I just learned theory, now I need to learn about the equipment.........

Usually a 60 series string will not fit in the standard nut. You most likely broke the nut when you tightened the strings. Yes they should be sitting fully inside the slots on the nut. i had to take a knife and gently carve out bigger string slots. When i got a new nut i also had to make a shim because the height was different.

Theres a thread about tuners in the gear section. Nuts are like $3 for your basic LP model or strat. Theres lots of topics on strings if you look around too.

Sory to hijack the thread but on the question of nuts (quit the sniggering!);
Does anyone have any experience with brass ones? I was thinking of replacing my Jackson's with a brass one.

The nut was broken before I bought it. Yes, I'm a noob. I didn't notice it when I bought it...... When I went to put the low E in I noticed it. Is there oversized nuts (lol)? serious though?

O yeah, I ment tuners as in the things you tighten the strings with.

oh machine heads. I dont know, i've never replaced any for better ones before. What kind of guitar is this anyways?

Im not sure if they make nutz with slots for larger string guages but there are different heights as far as i know. I replaced my off-white colored one with a black one so theres different colors too. Its pretty easy to take a sharp razorblade knife and scrape away the sides of the nut where your 3 low strings sit. (just dont dig down, scrape the sides.... sorry if that makes no senseses )

I have a epiphone special. I went to Guitar Center and they didn't have any nuts. They said they would make one for me for $65 and I was like screw that. I just bought strings. I called up another local place and they said they have nuts for like $5. The dude was like do you have the tools/files to install it?? I just sand down any left over residue and then maybe sand it down if it's bigger (longer, strings would sit higher) then mine?

The nuts are probably not precarved. Ask the dude if he'll do it for you.

As in the notices for the strings aren't already indexed/cut or whatever?

Yes.

Most new nuts come as 'blanks' unless you're buying specific branded parts like Fender or whatever.

All the ones ive seen around here are not blank. That would suck to have to cut your own slots. And by the way guest, the nut is most likely not gonna sit higher, its usually lower and you will need to make a shim for it. The one in my guitar is about 1/8" shim. Glue it down and tighten your strings down on it right away to hold it level and in place.

What did you use for a shim?

Well the local guitar shops are closed so, I'm just going to have to use the old nut. The low E string doesn't pop out, but I think it's contributing to the buzzing.

I had to crazy glue mine off one time when i put 60's on my guitar and the corner of the nut snapped off heh. Probably same thing you did. I used some kind of wood... it was 1/8" thick i think and i just sanded it down to the exact height i wanted and gued it back in place. You need just a little peice, ill try and get my camera working and post a pic.
