old cd´s vs new cd´s
Do you guys think that the first cd´s metal bands give out are better than the new ones or do they get better with time? I know it differs but in most cases.

In most cases, I so incredibly couldn't generalise.

i'd say they get better.....
mainly cuz the recording is usually better with evey album, and the band is more experianced with their instruments
plus the vocals usually evolve for the better.
and lastly, when they have a big style change, it is usally better like ToT, anathema, amorphis, moonspell etc.

When a band starts releasing cd after cd...the quality becomes shit and the band folds.
If they spent as much time writing every cd like they did with their first(s), then i think most bands would always have great new releases.

it seems all the thrash bands are releasing new stuff that sucks. except for testament, look at the gathering(98 i think? maybe 99) . they released probably the best thrash album of the 90's in the late 90's when everyone of thier peers had either broken up, softened(megadeth) or totally sold out(metallica). God Hates Us All was ok, so good thrashers on there, but a few shit songs not present on earlier albums. and look at Gore obsessed, released this past February, probably CC's best album and it's thier 8th album.

....athough I do like the new style Dimmu Borgir as well....
Dimmu started as slow melodic black metal, and today is fuckin´ fast and hard...

sometimes the bands music improves with each recording, so the band is evolving. but there are cases, when the first album is good in musical terms, but the production is a little weak. and the next album is so produced...but the music is boring. (for me, such bands are the sins of thy beloved and tristania. like their debuts, but not so much their next releases)

old cd's tend to be better because they have to impress the record label

This is a pretty generalized question. It varies from band to band. Plus, some bands get better and better and better, then all of a sudden: crap. Or some bands start out great and get crappy. Or some bands dont find their sound until a couple cds in. Or some bands start out great, make a personnel change or two, and become AWESOME. And some bands always suck and never stop. Basically, too big to generalize, and fuck you for trying to make me. I'm just kiddin!
No I'm not.

I heard this somewhere..."You have a lifetime to write your debut album, and 2 years to do each of the next". I think that kind of sums up why the first albums are better, I'd guess. Plus the earlier ones are usually much harder.
Cheers,

It depends a lot on the band. Take Cradle of Filth as an example , The Principle of Evil Made Flesh was a great album . They reached musical maturity with Cruelty and The Beast and now they have released two compilation albums and a live one... wtf? They are considered popular/commercial and i slightly agree with that. either theyre running out of money or they had something to smoke.
Theres nothing u can do about it so you'd better move on and listen to other bands.
Hail and Kill.

same goes for in flames, but their new stuff kinda sucks if you ask me.
more bands make shitty music on the later cd's, from sepultura I only like stuff before Chaos A.D. and that cd itself.
ehm, more bands, in general, ofcourse, metallica, machine head etc.
not my kinda music but I've heard their cd's. pretty much all of them

CD'S
IT DEPENDS IF THE BAND IS SERIOUS ABOUT MAKING MUSIC, AND MAKING EXCELLENT ALBUMS THROUGHOUT THEIR CAREER. LOOK AT SLAYER, VERY CONSISTENT AND AWESOME BAND. IT ISN'T SO MUCH OF EACH ALBUM BEING BETTER THAN THE LAST, BUT IT BEING JUST AS GOOD, WITH A NICE CONSISTENT RECORDING OF THE SONGS. PERSONALLY HELL AWAITS RULES, BUT SO DO REIGN IN BLOOD, SOUTH OF HEAVEN, AS WELL AS THE REST, EXCEPT FOR DIABULOUS..., IWHO KNOWS WHAT THEY WERE DOING THERE, BUT THEY RULE!!!
