11-48 for your second, I think. Optimal tension/playability ration methinks. But then my guitar is a seven string baritone.
For your first I can't say so much. I've been a wholetone down since I started playing guitar.

I suppose I wasn't thinking about the drop C. I think a 10-52 was too choked out for D standard. That would be for strictly drop C.

No mate, 11-52 Dean Markleys("MED's") are perfect on my 25.5" scale, Floyd Rose guitars in D. Drop C would be too floppy for that, try to find something with a heavier bottom? This is of course if you play a lot of tremolo picking, you want that sort of tightness.

My rule of thumb for a 25.5" scale guitar is one size up for each letter down (not counting sharps or flats). On me "E" guitar, I use 10's. On my "D" guitar, I use 11's. On my "B" guitar I use 13's.
So if I get a "C" guitar, I will put 12's. This seems to work well for me with minimal adjustments (aside from intonating).

for your drop c tuning use 10-52
for drop d tuning use 10-46
more you tune down more the gauge is big

Tony Iommi uses 8s and tunes down as low as C. Make of that what you will, but you don't need to use heavy gauge strings if you don't want to. Find a gauge you like and stick with it.

Don't forget that someone with as much prestige and influence as Iommi can afford the best guitars out there, and have his own signature guitars that could be set up in a way to allow such a .....ridiculous tuning in regard to the string gauge. Regular plaeyrs like us do not have such privelages. And I could have sworn most of their songs were in C#, not C. Which song are you referring to?

Do you really think that when Sabbath was first starting Tony could afford those boutique guitars? Most of Sabbaths songs are actually in D. Only one song is in C that I know of and I can't think of it right now. I understand the logic behind using heavy gauge strings. But in my experience they tend to sound muddy far faster than lighter gauges, especially if you like to scoop your mids.

for standard d and dropped c im using those zakk wylde strings. the top string is a 60. i had to loosen my truss rod like all the way to keep my neck from bending.... but i love the feel. its soo snappy

who scoops mids anyway, that makes you sound like a pussy. mids = BALLS
8's for standard are outrageous as is, but the reason he used them for his low tunings as well is because he didnt have fingertips, and with 8's he could play easier.

Yeah, this is a pretty good way of doing things, and if you need to tighten up the bass strings when playing in those half-steps between, try a corresponding hybrid set.

I think i read in an interview once that the reason Tony Iommi does that is because he got the tips of his fingers cut off and that makes it hard for him to bend notes

I need some string gauge help as well. I usually play with a string gauge lighter than recomended. Like for B standard I use 10-52 Light N Heavy and for A standard I use 13-56. I use bends a lot and it makes it easier for my personally. So I was wondering what gauge would fit my needs for the tunnings
D standard.
C Standard.

Um... 9's?
How can you play in B with a string gauge that light? Sure bends must be easy but playing any kind of tight rhythm must be impossible?

Actually it's funny. The strings don't flop around at all. It's light and Heavy. So I have a heavy bottom but with light high strings.
