new, help on screaming etc.
i've been looking on the internet for quite a while now, on information and help on how to scream / growl. i'm only 17 years old, and i'm female, and i'm finding it quite challenging lol. i'm only just starting out, and have only been practicing for a few days or so, would it be a good idea to get a teacher? or should i try and learn myself first.
i've taught myself to sing, and i've been singing for 4-5 years now, and i want to move into something different.
and it sucks that most screamers are male
any help would be much appreciated, thanks x

I can't imagine there being a teacher that instructs on screaming.

i wouldnt try to imitate anyone, create your own sound.
for growling (the way i do it anyway):
put your hand on your throat and then clear your throat (the umm-hmm noise)
you should be able to feel what parts of your throat do what
point your tongue upwards (almost touching the front of your palate)
angle your head either straight forwards or slightly downwards
now tense your throat in the same places clearing your throat did and speak through it (generally keeping your tongue still)
when you growl try not to sing, think of it as pitched speaking
and for breathing: dont take deep breaths unless they are absolutely nescessary (you have to make it trail)
you know how when people say "by the way" with that short intake of breath just before, that is what you'll want to replicate in your growling.
hope that helped
Edit: if you clench your abs it can improve your sound but it's not absolutely nescessary
also try not to eat toffee before hand lol

i just yell where it doesn't hurt...sometimes it hurts...but i still yell...especially to exodus...wooo my throat gets a nice thrashing...fun...
if you are looking for the high pitched kind of screams like black metalish it is going to take a bit for your vocal chords to get use to that way...I know it took me a few weeks to get them to where it didn't hurt to sing like that for long periods of time.

Grab a mic and scream until blue in the face as if someone just electrocuted your back, lit it on fire, and put out the fire with a sledge hammer. That's your sound. Live with it.

On the contrary, there IS a teacher that teaches how to scream. Check out Melissa Cross. She taught Slipknot, UnderOath, Lamb of Got and tons more.

I've been doing Screams, Gutturals, Pig squeels, for years now...and its something that does take time and practice to develop..I am the vocalist for Sleep Terror and most of the stuff I do is more mid range growls with a few Punchy lows and pig style sqeels...and it took me lots of practice to develop it..hell...I remember it pissing me the fuck off if nothing ever came out the way I liked..I recommend recording yourself and listening to it as well.

Hahah really? Well I hope there is more, cause the screaming blows in those three bands.
