Mikael Åkerfeldt's Death Vocals

Is there anyone here able to discribe his techniques? For the ones who don't know him, his the frontman of Opeth. He has a remarkable wide range in his Death-vocals, not to mention his clear singing voice. I'd really appreciate any info.

I have a feeling his death vox are actually really quiet? Like just by listening to them they sound almost under his breath.

But then live and recording he looks as though he goes real hard so I dont really know, i can kinda do them but only really quietly rasping. Opposed from actual growling which is loud.

Yeah he goes pretty hard when he does them aye. He must REALLY just push that rasp with everything he has to get some volume.

Its a pretty random vocal style

Check out Shape of Despair, I find their vocals somewhat similar and even better (Perhaps it's just for the genre; Funeral-Doom.) None the less, perhaps that might leave a little more room for you to get ideas? He's certainly putting a lot into his vocals..force and such. I want to think he's using a similar approach to gutterals, lows of course, but similar vocal areas?

Definitely quiet. He pushed really hard, but closes his throat a lot so not too much air escapes.. it could be considered "wrong" technique if he didn't sound so amazing.
