Stripping down a guitar to have a natural finish?

I've been thinking of picking up a cheap explorer-type guitar and stripping off the black paint to get that wood out. Some guitars like the Ibanez RG321MH have like a dark wood lacquer on them that makes the wood look darker than it really is. What kind of product is this, can I find it in a regular tool/paint shop? I'm figuring it's similar to what people use on hardwood floors and shit but I'm not sure.

Secondly, is it absolutely necessary to strip the paint with some heater thingy, or can it be simply sanded down(I'm aware this will take a while)? Has anyone here given a guitar a natural finish by stripping off the paint and how did you do it?

You can just sand it down, but like you said, it will take a while. I bet it is better for the wood to just sand though.

Yeah "mahogany oil", that's what that RG has, but I figure I'll have a much easier time looking for a conventional "tool shop" kinda dark transparent paint for wood. So long as it's not toxic as fuck or something. I should clearcoat it afterwards so the guitar doesn't feel rough right? Or should I leave it as it is so the wood "breathes"? I wonder what kind of impact on the sound of the guitar this would have.

Also for that wood paint thingy, should I just brush it on or must it be done with a spray can? Cause that would blow if I can't get it to look nice with just brushing it. Maybe what I'll do is just strip it myself and take it to someone who knows how to paint woods and shit.

You can skip the lacquer if you want but you better sand it so it is real smooth. And if the wood is very open grained you might need to fill it with some shellac or just use some oil.

When I stripped down my RG I used a heat gun to remove most of the paint and then sanded the rest. It's pretty quick but the inside of the horns is a bitch.

Tung oil is a great natural wood finish that you can apply by rubbing in to the wood by hand. You need to maintain treatment more often. It wears fast and needs to to be applied about once a year with light sanding. It does work as a wonderful finish though. It just takes mindful care.

Yeah that's what they use on the back of necks right? It wears off fast as fuck, I just prefer raw maple with no finish. Do you know of any other finishes that last longer/look nice(like add a bit of darkness to the wood.)?

A light wood stain would make it darker. You could stain the wood and then sand it again until you get the darkness that you want. The stain will set deep in the grain and look nice too. Then seal it all with lacquer ( satin finish lacquer feels and looks very natural ) to protect the wood. The lacquer will darken the finish just a little more.

Hey the best thing out there right now as far as wood stain is from an outfit called WOOD BURST..check out their websight.. they have a large variety of colors and they are easy to use...hell,they clean up with soap and water.. NO BULLSHIT.!!!! It works excellent..I was amazed...
I just used their color called Carbon black on my Nightswan...it looks amazing... No matter how many coats you put on the wood grain always shows thru... and its dry within a day.... prices are cheap too.... woodburst.com

Ive tried this, and the wood underneath is usually very hideous. I was gonna put a nice stain on it but when i saw the pattern and color of the wood i ended up painting it dark blue. Bad idea....
