Check out ManytTone for nice sample packs.

As some people on this board have pointed out before, try Acoustica Beatcraft.
There's even a "black metal double-bass" tutorial at this page: http://www.demondigital.com/backstage/tutorials.php

I use Drumkit From Hell using Halion as a sampler as Cubase for sequencing using a custom drum-map (it's a bit of a pain but it's worth doing), or if I'm feeling lazy I just go with GrooveAgent 2 in Cubase. It's main selling point is all the preset patterns but I never use them, just sequence in Cubase again. The sounds are pretty good.

Get some decent to high quality drum samples and then a tight drum sequencer like Cubase on a powerful-enough computer setup and you'll be unstoppable. I love doing drums this way.

... yah and if you dont have that which most won't.... use fruity loops. You can do almost anything you need to record half decent computer-drums on there. They all suck to get used to, but once you do, youll be making some good tracks.

Seconded. Beatcraft kicks ass for programming metal beats. It resamples really well, as well, so you can do those bitchin' china or crash blastbeats and it doesn't sound fake and shit. If you want to do all the MIDI stuff, though, you can download Drumkit from Hell 2 off bittorrent (it's a big file, though). I think that it comes with it's own standalone sampler and shit, but it's kinda confusing at first.
