get a Shure SM57 and plug it into your computer and hti record...the important thing is not to have the amp to loud where it fucks up the mic's ability to record...example I had some guitars I was recording and it wasn't super loud and you could hear it fine just therew as this buzz whenever I played...turned down the amps a bit and adjusted the mic a bit and it worked perfect.

If you have a decent enough computer (doesn't have to be some ultra-game machine..)

You can download lot's of good (multi track) software trials. I personaly prefer Adobe Audition. It may be not the most powerfull recording program, but it certainly one of the most user friendly. But other industry standard programs are Sonar, and Protools.

You also need a way to get the sound from your bass into your soundcard.
A conventional way would be to play your bass as you would usualy, through a combo or stack. And mic the speakers. This usualy gives a very nice sound, but prepare to spend hours to find the sweet spot for the mic and spend another hour or so tweaking the sound to your liking on the pc.

Another way would be to use a pre-amp or the preamp stage from your combo or stack, if it has an fx-loop, and plug it into your soundcard. The line-in port is preffered over the mic in, but if you can only use the mic in, don't forget to uncheck the option for mic-boost in your volume controlls.

You can also use a preamp software simmulation. Pioneers in this sector are Native Instruments and IK multimedia. I personaly use GuitarRig2 from NI, and like it very much, it also has a bassamp simulation, but I can't vouch for the sound quality on that.

Oh, and a final note: If you plug your bass in trough direct-input, don't forget to use some colourless volume control, like and EQ or volume pedal. Clipping on soundcards can get very very nasty.

Oh, and another thing: the electromagnetic radiation from your computer monitor can get picked up by your pickups if you play too close.

CRTs (older fat monitors) cause this problem more than LCDs (flat screens).

Get a good pair of headphones.

Realy. do you want to spend $100's for audiogear when you can get so many awesom programs for no money (if you don't mind doing something 'not legal')

All you need will cost you as little as $35 dollars and some patience:

1) Amp with a headphone/line-out jack (you probably have this already)
2) Soundcard on your PC with a line-in port (you almost definitely have this already)
3) 1/8" to 1/8" stereo mini plug cable ($5), to connect amp to your pc
4) A pair of big headphones (at least $30) that come with the 1/4" big plug adapter
5) Audacity.. free pc recording software, http://audacity.sourceforge.net

You can get all of this at any mainstream major electronics store. The software is free. I assume you got a pc, not a mac.

Stick the 1/4" adapter on one end of the stereo cable, now plug it into your amp's headphone jack.. then plug the skinny end into your pc's sound input. Install audacity on your pc. Now, to make sure the software "hears" your amp, double-click on the volume controls icon in your system tray and make sure the line-in is not muted.. then while still in the volume controls go to OPTIONS, then PROPERTIES, and show RECORDING CONTROLS and make sure the line-in is checked.
Also, you can keep your gain up for distortion, but keep your volume low on the amp.
Plug your headphones into your soundcard where speakers would normally go so you can hear everything.
Mess with the software a little bit to figure out how to record.. usually very easy.
