Guitar Rig 2
I am currently using it, and damn! It may not beat a real tube amp, but as far as (software) simmulation goes, this program sounds pretty good! And it's easy to use too.
Who has experiences with this program? Do you like it? Would you use it in a live/jamming session?
And anyone has some nice hi-gain patches to share?

Hmm, not sure what your problem is.. can you drag the amp models to the 'main area' in the middle? You can find the amps on the left, after you press the middle button on the top.

doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose of even playing metal?

Sounds like your input is too high. Do you have high-gain pickups?
Do you play in your line-in of your soundcard? If you don't have one, make sure the "mic boost" in your windows volume controls is ticked off. In the same control window, make sure the input volumes are reaally low.
Also, in the GR2 window, check your input and output levels. Is anything going in the red? Clipping on soundcards is very nasty, and sometimes results in no sound at all!

Not everyone has $1000+ to spend on a nice amp, or the room to put it.
Have you tried it? It's realy good for home recording and practicing.

How do those amp models sound?

in general? very good. you can tell its just tube emulation but its the next best thing. the JCM models might even be too optimistic. like they sound better for metal than they should. the trip rect has that finnee fineee crunch just like the original and i am in love with the engl and uberschall models.

GR2
Yeah ive been messing around with that lately too
on the gratifier model with sag response variac and bias controls
theres quite a few sounds you can dial in
i have a patch that sounds alot like a krank
and ive been working on one for framus
as for recording and live performance goes
the recording is a bit to fuzzy but if you can manipulate it right
you can get a very decent solid sound
ive ran it through the effects loop of my head and it sounds pretty cool
gives it the feel of a line 6 amp kinda
but they say the guitar rig signal is more for PA systems
ill have to try it out
for me its just a fun tool to make new sounds
but if you have the patience it can be used effectively
in live and recording applications

How is recording with this thing? Does it have a lot of latency/lag? I have the Revalver amp simulator and I can't play in real-time, it always lags like 750 ms(almost a second). So recording/practicing is useless and annoying. My comp is fairly decent(a few years old but very decent).
Does this thing also lag?

Lag occurs in all soundcards which use the standard "directsound drivers".
To help against this, they made the ASIO, which is only included in very very expensive industry standard soundcards.
However, for us bummed home users, some guy made ASIO4ALL, which works on almost all soundcards. Google it, install it, set it up in the option/preference panel of whatever program you want to work with. TRY IT!

what does playing metal have to do with digital amp simulation? plenty of good metal bands have recorded albums with nothing more than a line6 pod or with like an ampfarm/protools setup. and they sound killer.
not to say i would personally trade my engl powerball for those tones. but if the setup works great for you, play it, digital, analog, tube, s.s., hybrid, whatever.
