Changing picking styles
hey guys, i finally decided to TRY to change my picking style from a economy to a strict alternate picking style. I've been playing economy style for about 2.5 years and i notice there are certain patterns i have tons of trouble with and when i strict alternate it its much better sounding.
Any exercises to practice strict alternate picking?

Get a Stylus Pick, and do the excersises that come in the book with it.
Best thing you could ever do for your picking hand.

Hell yes, it's probably the only real practice 'tool' ever made that actually works.
ChopsFromHell.com even endorses it.

yeah, if you use strict economy picking youll find some patterns where youll have to use inside picking. ive found patterns/ways to get around the neck without any string skips where i have to throw my pick over the string and direct it in the opposite direction that it came from. (which is almost always seen in alternate picking). economy picking makes for smooth playing (very little resistance no matter what youre doing). so ive been doing strict economy picking for 7 years.
ive attached a .txt with examples
in example #1 i use economy picking to start it. but as i repeat the pattern it technically becomes inside alternate picking (blows at first but easy when you have proper technique). so thats the main problem with economy picking - you get stuck using alternate inside. most people avoid this but thats not necessary. not that its some big secret but if you use the opposite string like a spring and bounce the pick off of it into the next string and include some hand motion youll notice that it becomes easy to do.
in example #2 its just alternate picking (with outside picking). this is good because you dont have to screw around with paying attention to strings. and UDU bullshit.
each gets the job done. most players use alternate picking but try each of them for a while and see how you like it. and theres nothing wrong with doing both.

Why should you move the pick over and past the new string when changing in alternate? I just hit the string from whatever direction is the closest.

Alternate picking is economy picking when playing four notes per string. I don't see why people abandon economy picking - if one has truly mastered economy picking it comes as second nature as to when the change from economy to alternate is facilitated.
In short, it's not a question of which style to use exclusively - use both.

Quite so - what I was getting at was the fact that who cares what technique it is... the shortest distance to the string in mind is a line, up down whatever.

damnit, i JUST got done correcting your last post now i have to do it again. out of the thousands and thousands of songs that would be excellent examples for our discussion, call OF ktulu is one of the worst examples.
if youre going to clog forums with stupidity, do it elsewhere.
