Do you like at the gates?
I bought thier album slauter of the soul *yawn* and its probably the most incredibly average, extremely OK, bore-me-to-sleep metal album iv ever bought.
but then I hear thier earlyer stuff is more complex, like melodic death metal (what I like) so i wonder if this is this true, and if so which albums are the good ones?

I don't know ab out ATG, they kinda bore me. Maybe because there are like 100's of bands that ripped of their sound?

I saw them live in the early 90's, they were pretty damn special, it's a shame that their sound has been raped and plundered by every act on Roadrunner trying to break away from their shameful nu metal past  |

Slaughter of the Soul is one of the worst melodic death albums i've ever heard, especially considering it came out almost at the same time as In Flames's "The Jester Race" and Dark Tranquility's "The Gallery", which are far superior.

Well I'm not one for melodic death metal, it kinda bores me as a total genre, but Slaughter of the Soul is a really good listen if I'm in the mood. I never want to 'just listen' to it, I always have this strange craving for it and need to hear it. But that doesn't happen very often.

I'm not a huge fan of ATG, but the album is alright. It probably has less impact on people just getting into it because so many bands are locked into that modality so it comes off as nothing new. I agree with Ten Ton Alien, Jester Race and The Gallery are way, way better.
I've heard a little off their other albums and it wasn't anything remarkable. I'd be interested in checking them out too if anyone has recommendations.

i got it cus i heard it was this amazing classic record, and i will say that it is a good album, but its nothing new to me, and the vocals were pretty mediocre, IMO. i do love the track nausea for some reason, though.

Ok well all I ment by this thread was to ask if they had any better stuff, which I guess they dont, so I wont be buying any more of their albums....
but yeah, the Gallery and Jester Race are so intense and complex.... I mean the second time I listened to Slaughter of the soul I found myself just kind of siting thier staring at a wall drooling, and I started to count the number of times they said "face of all your fears" wow fun stuff.

I think I liked the first song on that Slaughter... album and the title track. The rest was too similar to itself.
And yeah I think we find it incredibly dull nowadays as theyve been ripped off so much. i can imagine when it first came out, it was probably a lot better to listen to afresh

You are so right. I've heard very few albums(if any) that can attest to it's staying power.
My case of SOTS is so beat to shit it's rather hilarious...it's full of cigarette burns, beer can bottom indents and huge cracks.

Fuck yeah. Even with the hundreds of bands that copied their sound, the excellence and (at the time) originality of the album still shines through. I can listen to this one all the way through and feel completely satisfied. They had a giant thrash metal influence, the same way In Flames had a giant iron maiden influence. So the jester race vs. SOTS sorta depends on which of those classic bands you prefer anyway.

Everthing from Terminal Spirit to SOTS. Its good shit to play on guitar too, thats what got me into the melodic DM playing style which i use all the time now.
