It's pretty easy. It's just hard to explain how you do them.

This actually does kind of help; probably some of the better tips I've thus heard. Chuck's vocals on TSOP are remarkable. By far my favorite higher end vocals. I've never heard anyone come close to that voice. With growls though, I find it easier to do them inward for some odd reason, though it's not as expressive as outward... kind of reminds me of that Tenacious D bit...

I'd take old school vocals over modern-day "ree ree ree" bullshit any fucking day of the week.

You mean his brutal Domination stuff? Or the ones he uses on Covenant and the albums before that?

Domination vocals are very laid back, but do require a naturally deep voice to pull off right(ever heard Dave talking?).
I can do Altars/Blessed(my fav style of vocals other than Covenant or Steve Tucker on FFtF) vocals fairly easily, but I don't get them to sound "harsh" enough unless I do it loud, and I can't exactly practice at home. It's essentially the same as groaning, like when you sit down after a long day of work and moan like "ahhh", obviously louder, higher pitched, harsher, and slightly forced.
Covenant vocals are close to screaming, to get that level of grind in your voice you need to sing loudly. Use your computer's software equalizer and boost the mids and listen to Pain Divine with that setting and you can hear that Dave is really pushing it hard on the lines.
Now Glen Benton or Tucker ish vocals is something I just can't pull of without ending up voiceless. I'd love to be able to sing like them easily. Gorguts' vocals on From Wisdom to Hate are also remarkable IMO, really stunning but not totally hardcore screamish shit.

For all intensive purposes, yes, he's close enough to be considered tenor.
The late chuck scream is a scream. The early chuck scream/growl is like trying to do Max Cavalara with a low scream of sorts.
I've also noticed that the early chuck vocal style is strikingly similar to James's voice in Ride the Lightning, where they both have that metallic, reverbed crunch to their voice.
