looking for a tube amp

i just bought an avatar 4x12 cab, and was looking for a decent tube amp around $1500 or less to pair with it. i'm able to wire the amp for 4 8 and 16 ohms, so that isn't an issue.

i really just need some recomendations before i go try some out so i don't spend hours upon hours trying out hundreds of possible heads.

Going out and trying hundreds of heads will be more benefit to you then just asking on an internet forum what to get.

All amps sound different and different people like different sounds. The best thing for you to do is try the amps within your price range and get the one that sounds best to you.

For example. a person on here might play an Engl powerball. So naturally he will suggest one to you since he likes it. But just because he likes it does not mean you will.

Get my drift? Good luck on your amp search!

What genre(s) of music will you be playing on this amp? Because obviously that'll have a big influence on what people will recommend to you

i'm aware certain people prefer certain brands, but that's what i'm looking for. i plan on trying quite a few, but i'd like a general direction in which to begin.

and i mostly play progressive/power metal, as well as a bit of thrash and death.

Probably the main amps for those nowdays are

Peavey XXX or 5150
Mesa Dual or triple Rectofiers
Engl Powerball
Krank Krankensteins (lots of people will recomend against these)
Marshall DSL or TSL (I recomend strongly against these)

ummm.... lots of different amps. but i cant think of many right now.

Personally i use a JSX

yeah... fookin priciest mainstream amps after orange's... like we're talking same price if not more expensive than a mesa triple recto. if you score one for less than 2000, props to you. But can i raise the question of why its reccommended against?

oh for thrash for thrash, marshall amps tend to have lovely thrashy tones, but the problem with them is the price tag for tubes... it can get a bit rediculous. So check those, the JCM 800, 900, and some of the 2000s.... im sure you can get them for a decent price used... avoid plexi's unless you are willing to hotrod it. I'd pair up the 800 and 900 with some kind of boost... probably a rat for gritty thrash like, or an od808 of some sort for anything else.

crate blue voodoo 150. this puppy has 3 different channels, example of users: Cannibal Corpse, Gwar, and... whats this... My Chemical Romance? you have lots of versatility in this thing, it can probably feed your thrash.

Kranks... the revolution and krankenstein yeah... you can get thrash out of them most definately, the cleans aren't anything to splooj about, and most people on this site hate them... not sure why though. again, an od808 adds grit on these things.

Peavey... 5150/6505 can definately push out thrash like nobodies business. I dont know anything about the XXX or JSX, so i wont talk about them.

[Edit: added]
Dragonforce is kinda powermetally... they use Laney's, i dont remember the specifics, but i KNOW laneys can push out some unique tones.

go play everything before you make your decision dude. happy hunting.

I have a few amps for sale on my page. I have a couple on Ebay right now too.
Jerry

Edit: There's a 5150 that I modded for sale over at the Harmony Central Amp Forum.

People dont like Marshall because they are the 'mainstream'.But seriously, shit high end amps dont become the definitive amp over decades.
Anyway,Marshall DSL/TSL > Peavey 5150's as an all around amp.

Krank isn't for 'thrash', that brand is 'trash'.

guys hes got 1500 bucks
try engl, splawn, bogner, save up more for a vht, or look at mesa (dont really like much for some reason), or yes even marshal. but forthe splawn, marshall, or mesas you could get away without spenind all that money. or for still good tones you could look cheaper.

The Framus Cobra is a good all around metal amp and in your price range used, or save up a bit more and find a used Diezel Herbert, great metal amp.

just try stuff out

but yeah you might wanna go for marshall DSL/TSL + Peavey amps first. (XXX/5150/6505/maybe an ultra or VTM if you have some money left over lol)

if you dont mind going by clips (or you live in florida) check out RockSolidAmps. pretty much every high gain amp you'll ever need to check out, aside from like Hughes and Kettner + Diezels + Bogners.

If all you want out of your amp is great onboard distortion and nothing else, I suggest a Soldano Avenger.

But, if I were you, I'd get a few more hundred and spring for a fucking Bogner Uberschall from E-bay. That thing will make your nuts drop.
