moonie has some amp questions
ok, so i have a 65 watt peavey bandit, BUT i am looking at moving out of my parents place in the boonies into an apt within the next few months. i want to trade my amp in for something smaller, but i dont want to go with a shitty little fender or marshall mdfx type of amp. i was thinking of an peavey envoy, but i would like to pick the brains of you gear heads to see if maybe there was a better sounding amp that i should look at.
here are my needs:
- 30-40 watts
- good amp distortion
- clean and dirty channels
- possibly tube, but not required.

Possibilities are endless, but you need a definate budget.I wouldnt advise trading in with a shop as such, try selling privately.Get all your cash together, and put it towards a nice tube combo.
But yeah, whats your budget.I can think of 10000's of nifty tube combo's.But when you say good amp distortion, and clean and dirty channel, are you after a high gain amp,or are vintage gain/lower gain combo's cool too.

Sell privately and take the time to test over and over again. If you stumble across the brand George and Dennis, take an extra look. I have their 100W combo, awesome tube thing, but I liked the smaller ones as well. Not sure what their equipment was, but I know that the larger ones have all the options you asked for.

i would prefer a higher gain amp, as i tend to lean more towards a melo-death/metalcore type of sound. but i do want a great clean channel as well, as i like to bust out a little ska and rockabilly from time to time, as well as leaning more towards an opeth style of playing.
the price range i am looking at is between $300-$500

You should look around for a Peavey XXX super 40. It's a 3 channel 40watt combo with a single 12. High gain and pretty versatile. I've played one and it sounded good at bedroom levels, and can definately be used in a band situation if you find one where you're moving too.

Well for $300-$500, yor not gonna get very much. I would suggest saving up more.

Laney LC30 might be exactly what your looking for.If you go Peavey,5150>XXX for melo/metalcore tone.Though the 5150 clean and crunch is nothing to write home about, but for home, its much better than many others.Though, they are priced to the shithouse nowadays.

Spider II, digital stuff, right? You'd have a hard time making me like it, that's for sure.

yeah, but its hard to get a tube with the kind of distortion i want in a 30 watt, its way easier with digital/solid state amps.

you know, I was messing with some vox amps at GC a week or so back. It was one of the ones that had some digital effects...I'm not so sure if it was tube or what model. It didn't sound to bad though.

if you are using the amp for nothing more than recording or practicing it doesn't matter if it is SS or tube in my opinion because you don't need high volumes.

If you are gonna get a digital modeling amp, Roland > Line6 any day of the year. Microcube ftw.

im not even going to bother with the micro, i want a normal amp, not some bullshit battery amp.
the 30 is intriguing, but i am having some doubts when it comes to volume and me moving to an apt, i think, honestly, 30 may be too much, i dont want to piss off neighbors too much.
i just looked at the 15w model, i may very well go with that, i dont use effects anyway, i just want to be able to switch from clean and dirty with a footswitch.

What you want is the Randall WH40.
I've got it.
Compact, powerful and awesome distortion.

30 watts isn't a lot for a ss amp.

The great thing about solid state is it sounds just as good quiet, s.s. quiet>s.s. cranked.
So,if you got the Roland cube 30,you can keep if quiet as the microcube, and have a ton of headroom(for an apartment anyway).
Roland cube 30 FTW.

I too have the Cube 30 . I give it a vote, too, though the only effect I use on it is a little reverb. The different amp models on it are nice, too.

RIGHT, I know it's out of the question; but as for myself I'm planning on using headphones in the appartment.
