Guitar Mod
i have a PRS Soapbar sitting around than i am trying to make into a guitar more suitable for metal. i have already routed out the pickup holes to fit the dual emg 81's i popped in there. however this guitar comes with a wide-fat neck which does not suit my hand or metal playing. does anyone know what processes i will have to go through to make this neck closer to a wide thin and also to remove the shitty heel that it has on it? btw. this is a set-thru neck guitar...meaning the neck is glued in, as on a gibson.

It sounds like a nice guitar. You should consider passive pickups. Two 81's would kind of waste it's opportunity, don't you think?

unfortunately the PRS SE's are their shit series. they are made in bah, the guitar isn't here right now, so i would say korea. the soapbars wouldn't work worth a shit for any style of music i was playing, so i went with the EMG's. i just purchased a strat-style ESP-LTD. although it IS an LTD, it is the highest quality strat-style LTD (MH-1000) and i enjoy it just as much as the true ESP's i have played. so this new purchase is why the foreign made PRS has become a project guitar. i am thinking of putting EMG-HA's in it to use as a jazz guitar as well.

you could sand down the back of the neck to make it skinnier, but otherwise theres not much i'd suggest doing.

deathcs. yes i will prolly end up just sanding the neck down a bit. but i will also remove the stupid damn heel. i hate that thing.

what are you just going to rasp that shit away?
actually that would probably be the most effecient. it might not look pretty but it should work.

i have a friend who's dad does custom cabinetry...i'll show him my esp as a comparison of a guitar with no heel...and he will hack most of it away and fine sand the final product. should turn out well?

all that routing for the pickups was unnecessary seeing as emg offers the 81/85/60/60A in soapbar form.

btw, wont you compromise the stability and integrity of the neck by sanding down and altering the neck joint? i dont know, im no expert, but you should check that out before you go ahead with the mods.

the altering of the neck is nothing that wouldn't be done by a professional. there is a place you can send your PRS to do such work. but it costs like 450 bucks.
and i wanted to shoot myself when i saw those soapbar 81's...i can't believe i didn't know that.

as long as the routing turned out nicely, then it doesn't really matter.
But yeah if you're friends dad is willing to do that and can do it well, then thats cool.
