57 works great for guitar, bass, heavy vox, and basic drum recording

I wouldnt get a 57 say only for bass drum recording though.

For general instruments, use a Shure SM57 (some people like to use a Shure SM58 for guitar because of the foam padding inside the head dampens the sound a little), for vox, SM58.
To plug in your soundcard use an XLR to Jack cable, then an adapter so you can plug into the 3.5mm jack socket on your soundcard.
