retube failure, smoking 5150 combo

i installed the five pre and two power tubes today. i ordered them from dougstubes.com. the installation seemed to go fairly well, hower the prongs on some of the preamp tubes bent. i believe they all straightened out while i installed it howerever.

i turned the amp back on and let it idle and warm up for about a minute. when i switched it off of standy smoke came out from the side of the amp where the power tubes and some large black box rests.

what happened? what do i have to do to fix this?

Probably cooked some capacitors. Best bet is take it to an amp tech, he will fix it up for you and it will run like new.

Sad fact, but it happens. Same shit happened to my triple rec.

I couldn't talk for about 10 minutes.

Tube amps are very fickle, funky shit like this happens from time to time. Just whatever you do, dont turn it on again. A qualified amp tech can tell you exactly what happened and fix it up no problem.

fucking a you got your ass into a shitty situation.

do the tubes look all burned up? or powdery instead of metallic at the tip like this?

a good guy to ask would be jerryp over at www.fjamods.com he's pretty much a 5150 expert, he posts on here from time to time.

Yea im thinkin best case scenario you just blew your tubes or fried a few capacitors, worst case you may have fried your output transformer. Either way, take it to a tech.

I would take it to a tech. It's impossible to say what happened without having the amp in front of me, but I can guarantee the repair is not something for anyone that's not familiar with the internals of an amp. Those amps are a pain right in the ass to get apart for repairs too. If I have to guess, I'd say you may have gotten a tube in wrong or had the bent pins short something out. It's possible to have a new tube fail too, but the tube wouldn't be smoking, there's other damage in there.

It's still sitting in the corner here! I started to work on it, but I've been so busy I haven't had a chance to finish it. Graham from Ed Gein wants to buy it from me if I ever finish it.

Cool Not to be a pest, but I'm interested in hearing what was wrong with it exactly.

I only played it briefly to see if it worked. I did notice the pots that were changed were the wrong pots. The filter caps were leaking too. Other than that I didn't see anything wrong with it. I hope to have it modded up and rockin in a few weeks if I get some time around here to work on it.

I would still have it inspected by a tech you might have caused some damage that will build up to a huge problem better be safe than sorry
