Progress of a noob

Just a quick question guys. I started playing guitar March 15th actually so it's been what almost 4 months. I learned a blues scale as well along with exersizes I've searched for on this very forum. Songs I have been working on lately are

Symphony of destruction
1000 times goodbye
and some random Judas Priest, mostly those two songs.

Oh and a touch of Cradle of Filth(Lord abortion) to practice trem picking skills. Just curious if i'm keeping pace with the people here, or behind and I should buckle down and work harder, or try different songs.

Excellent, I started on Priest, Megadeth, and Slayer. I have been playing for over two years, and I can play stuff like Necrophagist and Origin now, but I always go back to playing Priest

learn whatever the hell you want. Whatever you want to sound like; try to play like it.

Go and find some kids that play guitar. If their better than you, learn what they know and then some. Just meet and talk to other guitarists. Thats a great way to learn.

good...I must suck at guitar then...3.5 years and can't play necrophagist...maybe it is the fact that I never seem to have time to play guitar...i don't know...

Of course. After a year I'm beginning to feel almost proficient enough to call myself a metal muscian; but I've also calculated an average practice time of 3-4 hours a day.
Remember what I said in the "Dumbest thing someone said to you about metal"-thread:
The dumbest thing you could possibly say about any art is that "all you need to do is practice". That comment really feels like a penetrating stab in the back by a blunt object.

One song I like is Iron Maiden's "Infinite dreams". As I've said earlier, if you only look at the tab, you might easily mistake it for an educational kit for the metal musican.

Everybody learns at their own pace. When I started there was no tab books or web sites so I had to learn from ear and by jamming with as many people as possible. So get out there and jam!! Does a local bar have a jam night you could go along to?
If you can find any backing tracks to play along to this will help with timing.
Spend as much time as possible a day just playing, I used to watch tv and jam along to the theme tunes, adverts and incidental music that helped with pitch and improvising plus I could perv over Baywatch at the same time! Huzzah!

I learn stuff wrong too. I can play necrophagist but I can't explain it to anyone. I can play it because my finger muscles know what to do if you get my drift. I can't say you must play that note on that string

What Dahmers said! There is nothing like playing with others, not only for practice purposes, but for the music in general.

Ahhh I knew I was missing something. I kinda live in a small town and quite new so I haven't met everyone yet. The bar scene is basically filled with alcoholics in there late 40s. It's the UP of Michigan for god sakes

However I do know a few people, one I jammed with the other weekend. Was a great time. Dunno if I learned anything, he's about a year ahead of me (and it shows).

I do spend most of my evening on the guitar. ~3 hours or so. I also try to use a metronome but also have Fruity Loops as well for a simple beat.

Man to the guys who learned songs by ear. I think thats pretty damn cool.

Don't take to underestimating yourself; you can do it to with a lot and a lot and a lot and, well you get the idea, practice. And stubborness.

My learning curve was slow but methodical.

I began learning with open chords. On the side, I was trying to learn some single line runs. I didn't care where they came from, I just wanted to be able to play something!

Well, now I can metal it up or strum a tune. I've learned best of both worlds.

ive been playing for almost 5 years
ive never taken the time to learn anything crazily tech in my life
just whatever i thought sounded good that i could play by ear for fun
and now i sweeppick like rusty cooley

you dont need to learn every song in the world to get good at playing the guitar. youve been playing for a few months for christ sake.... dont worry about whats "up to speed"... youve only just started. for now you should just focus on getting your fingers ready to get used to controling your playing. just start with basic chords and rhythms before you try any sort of lead work. dont move to the advanced until youve mastered the basics. otherewise you will play everything with horrible control and even the easiest lead riff will sound like a load of shit.

Yea, why challenge yourself at all or take time to work on things?

When you learn challenging songs that you love, you have a sense of accomplishment. That taste of success will make you strive to have more of it. Eventually, you'll be better just because of your confidence in playing the songs you know. It is better to find songs that can help you to work on the basics, however. You can master the simpler aspects of a song and then go into greater detail. Always remember, you start in a rut. The guitar is all about time and effort.

jesus fucking christ. did i even once say that challenging yourself and working on things is stupid.... NO I DIDNT. go back and read what i said.

what i was saying is that you cant just jump into playing crazy stuff if you cant even do the easy stuff yet.

would you ride a bike without first learning on training wheels?... no
this is the exact same concept.

But i understand the challenging yourself bit. Eventually you have to try new things. Sure it might seem really hard at first but stick with it I guess

This happens to me aswell, although not at the extent that which you have it I believe. I mean, yeah during songs it's not real black and white, I dont think about what fret/string im going to - it's kinda just like a learned memory of where to go. I have days where I say "How the fuck does my brain remember all this shit?" and yeah, it just does.

I have to put a lot of thought into what frets im playing when I try to show / teach someone.

Also if I learn it wrong, it's really hard for me to get it right again.. fucking brain

Yeah, teaching someone else can also be a great way to reveal what it is you yourself need to work on.

I know exactly what you mean. That would happen sometimes when I first started. It hasn't been much of a problem for me in a while though, because as my playing progresses, logically, I become more adaptable. I'm sure anyone can relate to this.
