Scooped or not?

okay...scooping out the mids is very, very popular amongst metalheads and such...i personally hate it...i use a 15 band EQ and it has been fine-tuned by myself after hours and hours of toying...i think ppl automatically assume scooping the hell of your mids will make you sound heavy as fuck.

opinions?

Well, at first when i started playing guitar I thought scooping mids did make me sound heavier. As time went on and with more experimenting I realized that boosting my mids gave me the sound that I've been looking for and I haven't really changed that since. But overall its really up to the person whether or not they like the sound of scooped mids, its just preference really...

I have my bass and highs boosted more than my mid settings, but for some tones I will lower a specific mid freq and boost another mid freq. Just cutting mids out all together just doesn't sound right to me.

Scooping all your mids makes it hard to hear yourself when you when playing with others.

i preffer to boost mids and mildly lower highs... gives you the bite of a bass heavy scoop sound, but with body and cutting power.

Mids are the key to being heard in a band situation. Typically I have my amp set something like Bass 6, Mids 6, Treble 5. Thats on a scale to 10.

I too started out scooping. Then I realised something fundamental and turned down the bass to around half, mid to 3/4, middle sweep to 0, and high to 3/4; although I often change from tune to tune.
Don't you just love all these possible settings?

I love mids. Nothing beats just fooling around in creamy medium/hi-gain doing wild bends and hearing your guitar scream like a hot woman .

I gotta remember that one next time I use the guitar specifically for charming purposes... or just feeling lonely, I suppose.

So I guess its conclusive. The proper amount of mids can add particular flavor to ones overall tone

I boost up front before my main preamp and scoop left in the loop. I have a dual 31 band ART 455 EQ. ART was the only one that had actual high and low frequency roll off knobs instead of shity preset on/off buttons. Was thinking about getting a 5 band parametric priced around $300 or less to add to my eqing capabilities, but who knows. Their is a documented theorem that you can hear bass, upper mids and treble better at higher volumes than lower mids. I found my EQ was tailored that way before I knew the scientific backing. Also, scooping works better w/ amps that are centered predominantly around the mids, like marshall type amps or mesa mark series.

Tell them to start playing in bands. Then they'll learn their lesson on mids.

Then again, I think a lot of it depends on the voicing of the amp. If I had a 5150 I'd probably keep the mids no higher than 2, because that amp is such a particularly mid-heavy amp, and I do prefer a ever-so-slightly scooped sound, kind of like "None So Vile". But if it were a Mesa, I'd keep the mids a bit higher than that for sure.

I only scoop my mids when I'm playing really quiet. But when I have my amp loud i usually have my mids around halfway.

Alot of it depends on the amp. I have a Fender frontman and my settings are : Bass 6, Mid 4 and Treble 10, because frontman amps doesn't have nearly as much treble asa let's say, a marshall. So all the stuff(bass, mid...) depends on the amp. BTW I absolutley don't like scooped mids.

No way, totally scooped mids are retarded.
I think when one starts out playing, and you have a really crappy amp [like a Gorilla, haha], once you figure out the 'scooped-mids' thing then there's no turning back from it for like a year. Then when you start jamming with people or bands, you learn you need your mids like you need your veggies.

Lets not forget as you use better gear, you're able to see where you 'clip' and start rethinking your settings. It's different when you play with other people vs. just yourself.

Alot of how a guitar sounds on album lies in the mixing as well.

Personally I set my tone like this... Bass at 1 o'clock, Mids at 10, highs at 2, presence at 12 o' clock. I hate too much high end but my ear needs to catch some of that 'airy bite' or I'm not happy. Amps farting and clipping because of high bass settings piss me the fuck off.
