tremelo arms without locking nuts

Does it really go out of tune that bad? Also is it possible to put a locking nut just on the top of the neck, will that even help it from going out of tune just at the top?

Another question, I have a gibson ephipone (however the fuck it's spelled) special. Can you replace the piece at the top of the neck that the strings sit in? I tryed gentely prying it out with no luck, didn't wan't to brake anything.

They do go out of tune badly if you like to do dive bombs and use the whammy bar extensively. But if you just use the whammy bar for subtle vibrato and never push or pull too much or too hard you shouldnt worry that much.
The piece that the strings sit in at the top of the neck is called a nut. Im sure they can be replaced but im not sure if you can just simply pop in the locking nut. I'm sure there will be some routing and screwing involved. Just wait for some other guys to get back to you on that one, as they know loads more than me about that stuff.

Usually there isn't enough room for a locking nut where a convention nut sits, as they are different depths. A luthier can usually create a shim that will extend the area the nuts sits on, over the headstock so the deeper locking nut will sit properly.

It depends on the guitar though.

The main reason guitars go out of tune is the tension change on the tuners when you dive bomb and what-not, thats why cutting them out of the equation with a locking nut keeps your guitar in tune for like forever

even if you put a locking nut, you would need fine tuners because when you lock down the nut, the strings go sharp. i suggest that you get some locking tuners.

Locking tuners would help to some extent, but with very heavy dives the strings would go slack from the tuning posts and wouldn't necessarily settle exactly where they were, causing a messed up tuning.

Ok, I guess I'll just keeping for a locking whammy.

Also I need to replace the nut on a gibson special without a tremelo bar?

As has been mentioned, If you put a locking nut on the guitar what you going to use as fine tuners once you've locked it off as clamping the locking nut on the strings can sometimes pull the strings slightly out of tune.

The top nut will come off as they're only glued in place.

^ there's an allen "head" bolt underneath the nut??? That controlls action, right? does that have anything to do with removing the nut? can it be removed, fuck anything up if i do?

You mean the truss rod. The truss rod is embedded down the length of the neck, below the nut.

Removing the nut on a guitar will not affect the truss rod.
