Most disappointing band.
You know them, that one band that you'd really like to like, but you just fucking CAN'T. They get something just wrong enough to turn themselves thoroughly ordinary.
Mine? Darkane. They really pissed me off and I stopped listening to them after Expanding Senses. I absolutely love fast death/thrash, the more aggressive and juvenile the better. That category they fit into very well - listen to any of the tracks off Insanity. The first 30 seconds or so, nothing but absolutely toxic paint-peeling riff goodness, and then the vocals kick in and you suddenly want to paint your kitchen beige and go shopping for throw pillows. Scream screamy ouch-stop-piercing-my-nipple vocals utterly ruin the sound for me. Sydow always seemed to hit one note and hold it at the wrong times, and every time without fail it makes me want to punch him in the throat. Listen to The Perverted Beast and witness him sod the song up almost entirely.
Honourable mention to Black Label Society for starting off well and underachieving. When I heard the first grotty, blues-ridden Sonic Brew I did a little dance and spun the disc until it melted. However, soon after that they FORGOT TO WRITE INTERESTING SONGS and things took a turn.

Mine is Korn. They have some really good parts but as a whole the music is just droning and most of the vocals are weak.

I FUCKING love Darkane, and their vocalist. They were fucking great live, the singer is full of energy and he sounds even better live.
Anyways, Trivium is a very dissapointing band for me. Their music is fucking excellent, fast, technical, etc. But I can't get over Matt Heafy's vocals. He ruins it mostly.

cryptopsy, i own one album to study on the drums, they would rule if they got rid of the cookie monster<all thier cookie monsters>and shortened the songs
dillinger escape plan, not exactly metal but same deal, awesome drums, terrible music, even worst vocals. even calculating infinity i only can bear a listenonce in awhile, many awesome moments interrupted by fusion dorkness
90% of relapse catalogue
mastadon-that leviathan, or whatever, album sucks. thier previous work was good tho so i want to give it the benefit of the doubt. try as i must i cant hang
i hate pantera but do admit that they were one of the first heavy bands i got into
phobia, awesome band but a previous band i was in shared a bill with them years ago and the singer is a complete asshole. i cant listen to them ever since that show
any swedish death metal, i dont necessarily hate it, its just unremarkable, utterly forgettable

Behemoth-Their lyrics are just so fucking childish and/or self important that I can't take them seriously. Take Demigod for instance, what's with the little fucking explanations? He's a Polish musician, not a fucking ultra-cosmic observer of time or something.
Borknagar-I don't know what it is, because I like bands like Vintersorg and stuff, but these guys don't do it for me.
Evergrey-Every once in a while they will write an excellent song, but most of their stuff is just "The Tom Englund Show." I've heard Enya songs with more balls than these guys. However, I will admit I like most of the "In Search of Truth" album and the song "The Great Deciever."

Earth and Sun((((0000 what ever? I like a little doom and sloth but those guys are too lazy to change chords! Thought I'd really dig them but heard that split ep thingy and couldn't get on with it.
Six Feet Under! There was no need to inflict Graveyard Classics on the record buying public!
Ozzy after 1988, he should spend more time writing better tunes than having tea with Queen Liz at Buck Palace!
There was a side project featuring the guys from Anethema and Trouble years ago, that failed to blow my skirt up!
Pretty much all of Rob Halfords solo projects!
Just about anything signed to Roadrunner these days!
Can I gaze in to the future and say the new Anthrax album with the old "quick we need to make some cash" reunion line up!

Let me begin:
Death
I have listened to Scream, Leprosy, Human, Individual Thought Patterns, Symbolic, The Sound of Perseverance.
So quite a bit of it then. Scream... and Leprosy I liked for a while, though Ive grown out of em a bit.
The rest, aside from symbolic which I listened to for about a week, were wholly disappointing affairs. Its a shame, because I thought id like Death as a whole, but the whole thing and general style of his writing just doesnt mix with me. I acknowledge the talent though.
Autopsy
Just pretty shit. I listened to the Severed Survival album which put me off them for life. Maybe ill give it another go, but at the time it was disappointing
Possessed
Apparently "you cant like death metal without liking possessed". Thats absolute bullshit. Though they have some good songs, so not totally depressing.
Disgorge (USA)
Now, Ive grown to like these more than I did when I first listened to them so all disgorge lovers, back down.
But when I first listened I was like, what the fuck. its all a blur, but in the bad sense.
Still disappointing, people love this band and I thought I would too, but I dont think I ever will.
Carcass
I think its just Ive heard too many carcass rip offs before ever listening to carcass.
I know this isnt really answering which is the biggest disappointment (Death) but its just all these bands I found pretty disappointing considering their status.

disappointing affairs.

Metallica...if they would have learned to know when to end a song AND didn't become so much rock oriented they might be a lot cooler. Master of Puppets has got to be one of the longest songs in the world...even though it isn't that long. They should of ended it just before the acoustic break and it would have killed...but not...they just kept going...with an acoustic interlude and 2 more verses...blah...
Opeth...I heard a lot of good things about them...checked them out and was truly disappointed...long...boring...songs i think sums it up best.
Deicide...heard good things too...disappointed as well.
yeah that is enough

I totally agree...on the vocal subject, I'd like a lot more bands if it wasn't for their vocals...mainly...
Judas Priest
Megadeth
Dragonforce(somewhat accepting it now...)
Dying Fetus
Cannibal Corpse
Suffocation I could NEVER get into..and I've tried so bad considering the number of times they have played here and I've missed all the shows...I think a lot of it is the weak guitar tone, and riffs that just don't do anything for me.
Oh yah...and I'll add Opeth, I just couldn't be amazed by any of their songs really..boring shit.

Yeah, that's right...but I mean musically.I don't even know why, I think it's a mental block.I hated them as a kid because they were not heavy enough...and it looks like it stayed in my mind.

Yeah, you can't love a band for their influence. Unless you do. Which would be gay.
There are a lot of really disappointing bands by Jim's first criteria (you know you should like them, but definitely don't). I'm not really sure what I could do to single one out. Even the ones who immediately come to mind (Queensryche, Opeth, Insomnium, Today is the Day, some others) are what I would consider to be above average at the very least. Just not as good as they keep sounding in my head.
But in terms of shitting the bed after a promising opener, very few bands can top Comus. Black Label Society would be in the running, but, even so, they've never done anything nearly so big as a letdown from Sonic Brew as To Keep From Crying is from First Utterance. In fact, nobody I can think of has. If anybody knows both CDs, I will both be surprised and expecting you to agree with me whole-heartedly.
Oh, and while I appreciate that it's either ironic or hypocritical that I like Comus, a band who, despite its obvious influence on Opeth (i.e. 'my arms, your hearse), seems to be a perfect progenitor for both black and folk metal, neither of which I like, I also don't care. And I like T-Rex and Zeppelin, both of whom laid the way for a grown man to take the name of an obscure Tolkien villain or revel in a bullshit Viking fantasy. Influence, in my book, is not to be blamed on the people who ruled so much that idiots copied them.

(Old) Carcass...I fucking tried. Melodic Carcass just sucks and I hate them for that.
Old Lady Drivers. I love all of the members other projects, but I just can't get into O.L.D.
More when I think for a while.

Influence, in my book, is not to be blamed on the people who ruled so much that idiots copied them.

i love comus. and you can totally hear their influence in Opeth, through both their lyrics and acoustic guitars. SEE BAYING OF THE HOUNDS & MY ARMS YOUR HEARSE CD. i love the line "as i carry you to your grave, my arms your hearse" so much, and it gives me chill bumps every time because, unlike PST, I am infatuated with Opeth and have nothing but respect for these fine musicians. I like both cds, but i agree, First Utterance is by far the better of the 2.

Not just that, just the fact that Heartwork may have been the most painful thing I've ever sat through in the "metal" genre.

I got really turned off Opeth around Deliverance/Damnation. They used to be my favourite band, now I never listen to them at all.
The most disappointing cd I've perchased in a while is Coprofago's Unorthodox Creative Criteria. I really enjoy progressive tech death but If I wanted to listen to fucking Joe Satriani, I'd buy his fucking cd. Somehow this boring, weak-as-piss, pile of shit got nominated for the best death metal cd of 2005

I may add on... Breaking Benjamin's (yes, yes not metal, but in the spirit of the thread) song "So cold" is simply great; it was one of the first full songs I learned to both play and sing at the same time... and then I went and listened through a dozen other of their songs and it simply wasn't even near So cold. Just a lot of stuff that I don't know what to call.

It's not the singing so much as the song structure and that sort of nature over everything feeling. I can dig it for a while, but after a while, I just fall asleep. The singer's excellent though, love that soaring sound.

Today is the Day is also up there. I like what they have released but there is this strange line they just can't seem to cross. The Crown also had massive potential, but only showed it on Crowned in Terror. Everything else they put out can be pretty boring in its entirety. Leng Tch'e I love, but while the vocals annoy me on Man Made Predetor and the music is amazing, the vocals rule yet the music bores me on The Process of Elimination

I'm glad I'm not the only person around here that can't stand Iron Maiden...
Dream Theater. Too overhyped. Saw them in concert. Only like about four songs.
Cryptopsy...disappointing...was really thinking I'd enjoy them. I'd prefer my 20 bucks back that I spent on two of their cds.
Post FtR Children of Bodom. Just crap.
Early Slayer. The stuff they feel is good enough for Decade of Aggression and their live performances I tend to like, but all of the rest of it I'd rather not hear. I'm one of the minority, but by "early" I refer to every album before Diabolus, since Diabolus and GHUA are the only two that I'll listen to start to finish.
In the Beginning by Nile was kinda disappointing... guess I got spoiled on AotW.
Disappointed with Kill by CC, mostly because of the lack of Owen songs. They're repetitive and easy compared to the ones written by Pat and Alex, but I tend to like them more.
Metallica. St Anger. There's no reason for me to elaborate.
Pantera: Reinventing the Steel. Decent songs, but far below what I expected from them, especially considering the four year break in between albums. I can't get enough of Pantera, but I hardly ever listen to this album.
Morbid Angel: Heretic. There are what, 5 actual songs on there?
Most of the bands I've listed are among my favorite bands. I wouldn't really say so much that in these cases I'm disappointed with the bands (except Cryptopsy and Iron Maiden) as much as I'm just disappointed with a direction they went or album they released.
I'd have to say that I probably wouldn't be disappointed with most bands that I don't like and don't expect to like, I'd just think they're crap and move on. The ones I already like or really figured I would enjoy are the ones that come up with disappointing stuff. Jesus fuck this was a long post...

Korn were really heavy and vocals rules on first 3 albums after that you can start to forget. I think i'm disapointed with them and like also Converge.

I can see why Today Is The Day get quite a few mentions here. Some of the songs are great but others make me think why on Earth am I listening to this.
Iron Maiden is a strange band for me: I couldn't get in to them for years and years but suddenly, around last Christmas time, it all clicked into place.

I think Iron Maiden is boring now. The old stuff was great. I've tried listening to the new stuff and it sounds like a bunch of thier old songs. It feels and sounds uninspired.
Carcass - Heartwork: You guys are crazy.
That album rocks hard. I can't get bored of that one.
WASP can blow goat cock. They suck.

Well, it don't surprises me. you listen to Rhapsody and Dragonforce. FAG!

You can't play 80's music in 2006 any more than you could have played music from now back then. I don't find it a real 'disappointment' that Maiden no longer produce music of the same quality they did a quarter of a century ago, though; there are only a handful of bands that can manage more than a decade of top quality. Two decades is more uncommon still. Pushing into a third decade is more rare than an Idaho patriarch's steak.
If Dissection are so shitty, I doubt they're particularly disappointing to you in some way. Unless it's disappointment with the human race for having produced garbage and recorded it to disc. Try another one.

There's no "disappointing" band goddamn, "disappointing" is a gay word. or you like it, or you hate it. or whatever the hell you define. its great or shitty. and Dissection aren't any special. they recorded 3 completly overrated albums, yet one is a Live album, which is totally unnecessary if you recorded only two shitty albums.

They recorded four albums, not counting a 'rare tracks' type release.
And there are definitely bands that either
1. Seem as though they should be great but are actually bad, or
2. Show potential they don't live up to.
This thread isn't here to bash bands you don't like, so cut that shit out or go find a thread on Dissection.

the whole thread, assmunch
thats what people have been doin, listing bands that fill what he just said.
You can add Atheist and Cynic to my list. Alongside Pantera and Iron Maiden.
The latter two i can again, see why people like them, but really didnt appeal to me, I should have listened to em when I first got in to metal.
Atheist and Cynic I just dont see the big fuss about at all. They both sounded a little too cheesy to me.
Oh and Marino, I dont like Dragonforce. They are again, a huge disappointment, mostly because everyone was telling me if I liked Rhapsody Id love Dragonforce. Bollocks; Rhapsody are much more dynamic. Just thought Id clear that up. Because Dragonforce suck the cock.
Edit: How can I forget Suffocation. Again I think its a case of hearing too many suffo clones before even hearing suffocation, but I do not hear anything special with them. And Ive really tried to like them.

Fine. If you've NEVER, EVER been disappointed by a band, then a simple solution to your problem here might propose itself: don't enter a thread about being disappointed by bands.

I wasn't trying to be funny. I was trying to call you a giant wad of gay who's only passing the time here because he's too repressed to slum public bathrooms. And if I failed then, I succeeded now.
Mastodon doesn't strike me as treading the same territory as Clutch. Plus they do it way more seriously, which can always be a problem.
After thinking about it for a minute, Dillinger Escape Plan is a pretty disappointing band. Especially when they tried to do something more interesting and succeeded for as long as Patton fronted them. Being down with what they'd like to be doing no way allows me to excuse them for doing what they actually do. Which is be mediocre.

I feel this collective pain. Mastodon and T.I.T.D. are two bands in particular who were threatening to get better, and just FELL APART LIKE BITCHES and made me cry.

It has recently been revealed to me that we are not allowed to encourage discourse. Bands are either SHITTY or GREAT. There is no room for discussion about the structure of music. There is no room for the discussion of the human response to music. There is no room for conflicting opinions. NO TALKING. NO TEH BRANE USES. From this point in time, only the two criticisms of music will be accepted. Anything more sophisticated than an errant fart in a bathtub will be punished through Canadian homoerotic fantasy.
Seriously though. You're the village idiot of an online metal BBS. THAT'S PRETTY FUCKING DUMB. Hushies now while the adults talk.

Sun Ra's a major figure in free jazz. Very cool.
I honestly don't care if you call me a moron if we're arguing. It's the internet.

There are so many disappointing bands it's incredible.
Between The Buried and Me - Last album was covers, would've been ok if they ACTUALLY MADE THE COVERS THEIR OWN.
Opeth - Ghost Reveries, first Opeth album I bought. Biggest shitstain ever.
Cryptopsy - Once Was Not was a complete fucking flop, what the motherfuck happened?
Decrepit Birth - Should go back to brutal days of 2003, Hyperblast metal need not solos, they are just doing what most other Death Metal bands are doing now.
Odious Mortem - Devouring the Prophecy is a fucking boring ass piece of shit, their demos were fucking cool though.
Cattle Decapitation - Well, they're just a boring band.
Arch Enemy - shoulda called it quits ages ago.
Metallica - Needs no explaining.
Hate me if you will, argue intelligently please.

Wow i'm actually surprising at how many people hate the flanged, robot vocals. I fucking love them. Damn. Oh well. Each to their own.
Little side question. If I did the robot vocals in a experimental Jazz/ Metal song (regardless of whether or not you like them), would I just be doing something that has been done a thousand times before, and is generally not interesting anymore... or do you think I could never be able to do such great robot vocals Cynic, Athiest, etc.
Actually I haven't heard much Athiest, need more.
Anyway, The flangey robot vocals, coupled with the aggresive growl / scream just fucking do it for me. Such a good alternative to monotonous growling/screaming. Cynic and Portal, and to some extent Athiest and even Alchemist, are reasons why I will probably never get sick of metal. Focus is easily my most listened album ever, yet I still enjoy it just as much with every single consecutive listen.
Ok, my opinion over, on with the bitching.

Upon first listen, I would have agreed with you. Opeth have been one of my favorite bands since late 2002 and I thought that they were incapable of releasing anything less than 24 karat gold.
..Until i listened to the album in question. One word can describe my feelings-ambivalent. I have listened to this album around 15-20 times in it's entirity and it has ripened with age. However, I can't seem to listen to this album in 2 consecutive days, unlike Morningrise which could be playin 24/7 for all I care. The Ghost Reveries is definately a new style for Opeth, and I am curious to see where they will go in the future and how they will adapt without Mr. Lopez.
The Ghost Reveries is definately one of the worst Opeth albums, but it is still a quality release.
