Best solo ever?

I saw this bloody list of "100 best solos ever," not one! mentioning megadeth, priest, jason becker, malmsteen, steve vai, or ever shred/speed metal! so, i think its time for a new top 100 solo list--

im starting off with-

Hanger 18 - Megadeth
Forbidden City - Jason Becker
Annihilation of the Wicked - Nile

continue if possible.

Megadeth- Good Morning

The solo is just evil. I've never seen anyone tab it correctly and I still can't get the whole thing right. There are just so many little things going on.

I could kick Dave in the nads for writing suck a hard ass solo.

Cryptopsy and Necrophagist got badass solos.

From Necrophagist, you pretty much named them all, except Intestinal Incubation!

From Cryptopsy, Abigor, Emaciate, Angelskingarden

Suffocation on Pierced From Within did an awesome job with their solos.

Suffocation - Brood Of Hatred
Suffocation - Depths Of Depravity
Suffocation - Thrones Of Blood
Suffocation - To Weep Once More

The solo on Retry?Abort?Ignore? by Martyr is so weird, but so awesome at the same time.

...

And the solo in the song Child in Time by Deep Purple was the first solo I loved so it should be in there too.

Wicked

see this is the apparent 100 best guitar solos:
http://guitar.about.com/library/bl100greatest.htm
Now you see what im talking about?

And its classic that a couple of you post some really really heavy thrash, then all of a sudden throw in some deep purple or sabbath, nice to see alot of people stick to thier routes.

But cryptopsy has the most favourable solos? I didnt see that one commin

Keep it goin though

Domination - Morbid Angel
Meshuggah - Entire Destroy Erase and Improve album.

That list has some Hammett, some Dime, some Rhoads, and some Eric Johnson in the top 20. So I'm not sure it's fair to say that metal or shredding are unrepresented. After that it also has Vai and Satriani. #36 is by Malmsteen. And so on. Metal and shred, considering their place in the overall context of music, are pretty fairly represented.

I'm really sick of seeing this every time somebody puts out a list of great guitarists. Metal guitarists aren't going to be on there in force. Why? Because they're not by and large the best guitarists in the world, and even more because they're not the best known.

What I am surprised to see is so little Gilmour.

I didn't mean the ones they included, which are all so obvious I didn't have to check the list to know they were there. But his solos on, say, 'Dogs' are better than many of the ones on that list, and more structurally integral to the song (Waters even gave him a writing credit on the song, which is not standard practice for Waters, because he though they leadwork was so clutch). That is a test of a great lead and a great lead player, for me, and one to which not many lead players can actually measure up.

Death - Story to Tell
Edge of Sanity - Aftermath (the little solo that kicks off the song)
Cynic - How Could I (the last 2 minutes of the song are mind-numbing awesome)

edit: Infinity already mentioned Cynic.

The list itself is best solos, not best known solos.
although many songs on this do belong there, its not a question on who or who doesnt know the song, its the talent or technique put into it.

But i am sorry that i didnt see rhoads or vai on the list, that was my overlook. never-the-less, admit that not only most of the bands on it shouldnt be there, and the fact that there are far more supremly pulled off solos.

and just to put it out there, anyone here the solo in the powerrangers theme song? thats wicked.

A well-known solo is sometime well-known for a reason. Pure talent doesn't mean shit if the context is wrong. This is a fact well-hidden from modern metalheads and fans of virtuosity in any era, but it's still a fact. Saying that there's a 'better pulled-off solo' out there doesn't mean it's a better one, it just means that you're more impressed by it. But an impressive solo for its own sake is just so much masturbation.

not big on solos but always loved what slayer was doing late 80-early 90s. i dont think they are actually in key or anything, just a mindless shred of notes.

But that is SOMETIMES, and like i said, many of these belong here. And im not talking about songs that dont put talent in the right context, im talking about songs that werent on the list, that should be, due to the fact that its better. An impressive solo to me, and a well pulled off solo on its own is impressive for a reason as well.

Tornado of Souls is better than any of the Hangar 18 solos, though they are also quite good. I don't know what Friedman hit on that album and why he never hit it before or since, but man was it great.

Good call on Stevie's Little Wing. I need to find my copy of The Sky is Crying. I'm a pretty big fan of his solo on Chitlins Con Carne, too.

Yeah there's some crazy ass speed playing and sounds, but they go on for at least 5 days and once you've heard one you've pretty much heard the rest on the album.

I just did two things:

1. Read Mortal_Lament's rejoinder to me on the previous page (I'd missed it before). You didn't address my point. A well pulled-off solo certainly is impressive, but its context determines whether or not it's great. You're either myopic or just a plain idiot if you deny that there are great songs out there with either no solos, or with ones that are quite simple - and, in fact, these songs would be no better (actually a bit worse) with a complex solo thrown in. What this suggests is that a guitar solo is just one of the many components in a songwriter's arsenal. What I'm suggesting is that guitar solos should be considered on these terms, and their greatness judged in the context of their songs. And, in this respect, a lot of metal guitarists are severely lacking; their approach to guitar-playing focused so heavily on certain aspects that they were blinded to others. So there's a lot of impressive fretwork that fails to do a damn thing but is lapped up by morons. Great. There's a reason it's rare to see me praising more than a very few metal guitarists; most of them don't know what they're doing.
In short: a well-pulled off solo that doesn't improve the song to anybody but other guitarists with their jaws opened wide enough to suck off even the most well-endowed porn star isn't a great solo. Also, I'm not defending the list as being right on all counts; it isn't (no top 100 list is ever right). What I'm saying is that a list made by you would be immeasurably worse.

2. Redownloaded 'War' (I'd deleted all the Burzum on my hard drive during an attempt to clear up some space by getting rid of anything redundant or shitty) to see if it really holds up to the various accounts I've read of it from Transient as being full of 'emotion.' I don't tend to think of emotion as being undisciplined wanking, but it certainly might include that. In this case, to my ears, there's only that, so I, once again, find myself wondering why I keep giving Burzum extra chances. The riff is all right, though.

.

But again, this isnt a great song with no solo, or a simple solo to great song, it plainly states BEST solo. This does not have a plainly stated meaning though, a best solo in theory may mean what you are talking about. But thats not the point of the thread, its for the reason of a technilogically well represented solo. The simplicity of the solo is directly preportional to the quality. Sure, a simple solo may sound good with the song, and another solo wouldnt due, but those are not the songs im talking about.
You are right though, alot of metal guitarists really suck, but they arent who i am talking about. And your right, alot of songs on this list do belong, but im talking about the songs that werent represented, ones that people may have not heard, but are played magnificantly.

A solo that doesn't sound good in a song is a bad solo. You're only going to hear solos in songs; they don't exist in some other worldly plane, abstracted from their usual context. One of the fundamental things that makes a solo great is how it works in the song it's in; how it comes in, how it hits the changes, how it works with the dynamics to enhance the song. It's not coherent to think of them in some other way.

Anyway, I'll agree that this list is imperfect and that some songs don't deserve to be on there and others do. I just don't care.

I know what you're saying but this is not always true. You can have 'songs' that are basically one long guitar solos. You have Satch, Beck, etc. Doing songs which are just melodic solo type pieces. You also have live guitar solos, which can go on for several minutes, and they too are good, just by themselves. In fact there are so many, can't even remember the names of half of them.

The outro to Immolation - Bring them Down... would that count as a solo? its layered, so Id say its more just a lead melody than a solo.
(Yeah, i think there is a difference)

There's a difference between a lead and a solo, but the words are used interchangeably at this point. It's not too hard to tell the difference. But I don't know that song off the top of my head.

Satch and Vai songs that are just guitar solos (and that's rare, as they usually have a melody or something to solo off of) still have to work as songs (even if it's infrequent that they do). And live guitar solos that go one for a long time are cool, but rarely if ever are among the best done by that particular guitarist, in part because they don't really do anything.

Black Sabbath has really good solos, they're actually interesting to listen to, not just random notes played at impressive speeds.

So basicly any Black Sabbath song, but if I must name a few, uh... Warning has a lot of solos in it, Lord Of This World, Sabbath, Bloody Sabbath.

Add Where the Slime Lives to my list as well

Am I crazy to think that the solo in Amor Et Morte from Cradle of filth was really good?

Also- Cannibal Corpse's "Mutation of the Cadaver."

Yes.

Pat Metheny & Jim Hall - Lookin' up - good song, mostly solo techniques, so it counts.

is this what society has come too? so much bollocks on the radio full of like, fallout boy and other homos, that people forgot what solos are?!

However, it pisses me off that guitars are the solo instrument 99.99% of time. In fact, I don't know why it's called a 'solo'... the guitar plays over accompanyment! I would really enjoy a phat bass solo in some death metal, or a nutters drum solo, instead of it being a guitar all the time. I would literally cum.
