Mikael's growls are definitely my favorite because they never overshadow the music. When I first heard about Opeth about 3 years ago and how the singer could growl and sing I figured that he probably was good at one and maybe not so good at the other. Well, I was wrong.  |

I think his growls with Bloodbath were weaker than even Orchid and Morningrise. Peter was a better vocalist for Bloodbath, and he is nothing in vocal comparison.

I think mike was better and i think his bloodbath vocals were brutal as fuck.

Yeah those Bloodbath vocals were pretty impressive. The ones for Katatonia aren't really anything to talk about though.
I think his clean vocals are getting alot better than his growl. On Ghost Reveries I actually like hearing him sing better.

I think his growls on Katatonia Brave Murder Day are some of his best, but generally, I think his clean singing voice is better.

This may sound stupid but, I can recreate Mikael's growls in a whisper, but i can't get it any louder...and i feel if i try and go louder using this technique i will just tear my vocal chords up. does anyone have any advice?
..ps....Mikael's vocals are also my favorate...

Yeah it shouldnt feel as if your going to rip up your vocal chords id say atleast be able to do it at a normal talking voice. if not a little bit louder. and start slowly and build up, no use ruining your voice!

yeh, im not sure how to get the same sound at a talking level...unless i have a really phlem filled throat...in which case its really easy...i geuss i could always resort to drinking snot but....no...

Don't try, you aren't getting anywhere. Everybody can do that.
Anyway, Still Life has the best growls, namely Serenity Painted Death. Damnation has the best clean vocals, especially on Death Whispered a Lullaby. |
