I'm looking at the ESP M-II guitar. It looks pretty cool and seems cheaper than the Jackson USA DK1.

Anyway, the M-II is equipped with two EMG 81's, neck and bridge positions of course.

I was just wondering whether anyone has tried both the 81 and 85 in the neck position for solos and what the tone for the 81 is like compared to the 85. I'm imagining the 81 to be brighter than the 85. I personally have an 85 in the bridge position myself.

Depends on what kind of tone you want. Alot of Jason Becker's material had a "bright" tone to it, of course he didn't use emg's so moving on....

I have EMG 81/85 and have the 81 in the neck. It sounds great to me. I love my Standard Viper! I almost splooged on a parker though, but the tone is much to bright. I think you'll be happy with the purchase, sorry I can't help anymore.

Yeah, I know what you mean. In the end, one could always change the eq settings to get the desired tone.

So you have the 81 in the neck position and the 85 in the bridge position? It's the other way round then. I imagine you get nice beefy riffs huh?

EMG 81 is ceramic, so it's gonna be a little twangier and harsher.

I personally really like the 81 in the neck.

And I have an M-II, and I love the 81-81 setup.
