painted wizard necks

i'm in the market for a new rg. im thinking about the rgt42dx but im kind of worried about the neck finish. does it give it that "thick" feel or is it a nice enough finish? i was pretty much sure i wanted an unfinished neck but this guitar is sweet. thanks.

I havent played that exact model, but I tried out the rgt42dxfm or something like that with a flame maple top and non floyd trem. Its basically the same paint job. So, the neck paint matches the body. I believe it is black pearl paint and it seems to feel like satin finished to me as well. I'm not exactly sure what you mean by a "thick" feel, but it has a wizard II neck, so its thin, but not too thin IMO. The finish is def. nice and it plays smoothly. I'm planning on saving up for that guitar after I buy my cab.

i was playing that for about half an hour at my local guitar shop
it is a great guitar, but to be totally honest, the neck completely lets it down.
i wanted to get it, but after playing it, i decided not to, im now looking at the rg370dx instead purely because of the neck.

the neck feels ever so slightly thicker than the rg370 because of the paint coat. the paint is relatively fast, but satin finish which is found all the other plain necks is much much faster as it allows you to move around quicker. i also found that after about 15 mins of playing, the sweat from my hands caused friction with the paint coat, making the neck slower to play on and creating more resistance when playing. this means you have to put a lot more effort into moving your hand around the neck.

i dont think its suitable for shred, but i think it would be ok for just metal and rythm work as a fast neck isnt needed as much as it is for shred.

If the finish of a neck is ever a problem, just rub the back with some fine steel wool a bit. Gets rid of the sticky feeling a lot of finished necks have. Or for a few buck more, sand all the finish off and tung oil the maple.

Well if you aren't concerned with having a neck thru I believe that most of the prestige series have thinner necks and are unpainted. I know they cost more but it may be worth it if you think its gonna bother you that much.
