how do harmonies really work?

the only way i know harmonizing notes is to do it an octave higher or lower
how else can you harmonize them?

like just e.g revelations - iron maiden

if i wrote daves part i would of just harmonized an octave up or down

Diatonic and parallell. And you can mix them if you want, but those are the two ways of doing it pretty much.


EDIT: Maiden usually use diatonic.

3rds, 4ths and 5ths. Just play around trial and error to see which ones fit and give you the sound you're after. I learnt all I knew about harmonies from Thin Lizzy and Maiden

I just look at how other bands write harmonies. Parallel 3rds, 5th, and 1-2 octaves up are the harmonies I use more often.

u could always use chords, all kinds of chords. octaves work, but get overused.

That was usual harmonizing...harmonize...and then play the same notes on lower string...

How to harmonize? dunno I just know it worked when it sounds good because I have never studdied composition theory

Most harmonizing in music is in 3rds. Chords are either major or minor because of a 3rd interval. A major third is an interval of 4 notes, and a minor third is an interval of 3 notes. In the major scale, the 3rds always occur in pairs, except for the first and second notes; so. if you started with a C and its major third, you would ascend in a major scale scale with: D and its minor 3rd, E and its minor 3rd, F and its major 3rd, G and its major 3rd, A and its minor third, B and its minor 3rd, and the octave C with its major third. It's different with minor, but I'm sure this question has pretty much been answered anyway.

To put my 2 cents in TECHNICALLY playing an octave is NOT harmony nor harmonizing.

A harmony consists of 2 different notes.

this is true, but it sounds cool sometimes, i like chords so much better though, theres so god damn many of them

I'm definately not by anymeans saying that octaves aren't cool haha. Death is one of those bands that heavily almost always has someone playing an octave higher. I use it from time to time mixed in with diatonic 3rds (the STANDARD in harmonization).

Every once in awhile i'll throw like a 9th or something on top of a melody guitar with another playing 3rds. Sounds pretty cool, just really depends on the mood of the music. Which is the cool thing about harmonizing.

for harmonies all u need to kno is ur intervals and ur set. just screw around with em' and u'll get some cool results. dont just stick with thirds try everything till u find somethin that sounds good to u

I like writing riffs or leads that have harmonies that are at different intervals for each note, like if one guitar part goes up six notes the
other guitar part would go down six notes. It works out really good
if you know your way around the fretboard.

Technically no, but most people can understand the "slang" terminology of "scale" than putting it in a real music theory sense. What i mean by this, is that a scale is a certain progression of notes (generally 7) coined through variations and changes between the 12 pitches in western music. (Duh) But often times people (even myself) refer to scales when explaining just about anything to do with harmony because of the mass use of the word. But basically the correct word to describe the use of harmony would be the word KEY; although often times the word scale and KEY are used almost interchangably. (in most western civ cases)

So in reality the real answer in my opinion and probably most the knowledge of keys or scales is needed in harmonization.

I mean in a round about way i just said what alot of people said.

Diatonic is when the Harmony Line follows the Lead Line based on an interval and which Key its in, right?

Parrallel is when the Harmony Line takes an Interval and just keeps following the Lead Line with it.

I'm sure there are other types. What about when there are two independent melodies playing together, sorta like what Opeth does on alot of their songs? Is there a method to that other that just fooling around in the same key as the original riff? I think its called Counterpoint but I'm not sure at all.

i know in jazz they call it a fugue but im not sure if that term applies in a traditional sense. like if both guitars in a duo were to improv over the form it would be called a fugue, im pretty sure anyway

Harmonies

Thirds are the most common cause they sound wicked awesome...I have written stuff that has subtle harmonies that switch between 3rds, 4ths and 5ths...that sounds way cool and ominous cause it's unexpected.

Parallel harmony means that the interval between the notes of a melody and the harmonizing line doesn't change. Diatonic harmony is when this interval does not stay constant, i.e. when the harmonising line is shifted up a couple of modes.
