The joys of fixing up a guitar

Hey people I thought I'd post some shots of my guitar i've been redoing over the past year. It has taken on quite a transformation from black->grey gradient shit...to pure grey to now a solid flourescent yellow. The paint job isn't done, I still need to add more layers, paint on the black (however I decide to do that), and sand and clear coat it. This has all been done with spray paint and isn't as bad as everyone says it is...Anyways on to the show?

this picture is how I bought the guitar it had a shitty black spray paint job on it and tediously remove it by hand using some paint thinner stuff. Suprisingly it didn't remove the grey primer which was for some reason some high quality shit...wish it wasn't cracked though.

Once I removed the shitty spray paint I decided to remove the 2 single coil pickups and the 3 (or 5 I forget) switch because I never used them. I also switched out the Jackson Hum for a Seymour Duncan JB. I also completely rewired the guitar with new pots, wiring and made it fit for a humbucker with a volume and a tone. I finally cleaned up the neck by adding some nice oil to the fretboard and using a bit of steel wool on the frets to shine them up and get grim off them. From that I roughtly got this

That all nice and stuff but I was sad that the grey was cracking and I had 2 gapping holes in the middle (not including the slit with the former switch). So I decided to fill in the holes and repaint the guitar during my summer break. I was debating between ferrarri red and a flourescent yellow with black stripes or something blackish (maybe EVHish style...but not just lines all over the fucking place). Well I settle on the yellow with black and here is it is so far:
front
back cav
front pickup

You can barely see where I filled in the pickup holes and the switch slit in real life. Which I'm sure can be fixed with some sanding...Anyways I'll post some pics of it once it completely done too...aren't I a little narcissistic? Enjoy.

Nice!!! I redid a Peavey Raptor to look like Van Halen's frakenstrat, it was a lot of fun, and quite satisfying.

And what did you use for filler?? I used Bondo and a wood block to fill in a floyd rose hole

I used cherry wood or something that had close properties of basswood to fill most of the hole. I then sanded it down to just about flat and then used Epoxy (PC-7) to make all the little gaps smooth. I used wood filler for the slit and then epoxied over it to give it a better protection...Epoxy is hard as a fucking rock and I love it! I'm going to document some of the techniques I used to paint and mod this sucker...

Looks fuckin killer.

Make sure you plan the black bits well, you wouldn't want to over do it or mess it up, it looks awesome as it is.

Get some mockups on the go.

I'll send you to 2 links of that has pictures of the spray cans. Basically I used car primer because apparently car paint is a lot like guitar paint...and then I used some Krylon or whatever for the flourescent...I'm going buy some black spray paint this weekend.

Primer
Flourescent Yellow

and Mockup 1

yeah...

Dude, mockup the 'Thrash' to look like the classic Slayer logo! Draw it out on card and do a stencil of it, that'd be awesome IMO...

It's your guitar tho, Feel free to ignore me

If I repainted one of my guitars, it would definantly be fluoroescent yellow.

I fucking love that colour! More eyecatching than any faggot B.C. Rich design.

I dunno bout repainting the neck though :s

Yeah I could do it like the Slayer logo or hand draw the logo with my own style and make it unique...I like the "Thrash" logo right now...just it looks awkward on the body because it is all sharp and not so "realistic" like the Xs look. Was also thinking of maybe adding a nuclear warning symbol in between the pickup and neck...but I'll have to see how that looks.

Yeah I saw a Kramer Explorerish guitar that was flourescent yellow and I was like, "Fuck that color rules." It is a very 80s color in my mind.

repainting the neck? is it a neck through or something? If you have a bolt on and an extra neck laying around all you need to do is make it fit normally into the body. Then get a drill out and drill through the neck and then put the screws in backwards. I did that for mine and it makes for a GREAT body holder while you are painting.

Looking good

You guys who redo and repair guitars etc should be sure to keep you pictures/accounts of it sored away, would make a great portfolio if the future ever offers work in that line and you want it, or if you do it as a hobby etc.
