Seems that this is the forum where there are alot of writers, so I'll ask a question that has been on my mind for some time now. I am interested in writing really brutal sickening death metal lyrics (Along the lines of Cannibal Corpse) Or even more brutal if possible. The only problem I have is IDEAS....I can write ok, not all that great but ok...I just have a problem coming up with ideas....if you know what I mean, it's very hard to explain....like, once I have the subject of the song, like a method of torture, or suicide or murder etc....then the wheels start turning, but those initial ideas are hard to come up with. Anyone have any suggestions? ty in advance.

If you are just trying to be as gory as possible, ala CC etc, then;

Brainstorms. some people call them mind maps, whatever.

Sit down and just write down as many different torture, mutilation, or ways to die that you can, and branch off them with whatever they make you think of (Sorry if im teaching you to suck eggs)

Ocassionally youll put two and two together.

But the best ones I come up with, arent when im trying to force it (though I know sometimes you have to) its when I just sit and think, and eventually two ideas click together.

For example, I have a fear of spiders, and I bite my nails alot. So one day, im biting my nails, and I just think... what if there were spiders eggs under my nails, and they hatched and spiders started eating my finger tips and shit?

Sort of like that. So you see the idea? think of something that makes you cringe, or if you see something in a horror film or whatever, that makes you go UGH, write it down, remember it.

And then just mess about with phrases pertaining to it until you get something that sounds good...


This is all the advice I can personally give. as you say, when you get an idea, then its easier to write about, its just initially getting the ideas

Problematics last part was pretty useful i think cuz that's generally what i do unless it's gore grind.

Gore Grind is easy just think f the most disturbing things possible such as children getting forced fuck horses...............(I have NOT done a song about this) and just think of the most sickening things you can think of to go with it.

Or like problematic said look at pictures to give you inspiration unless your writing songs about children getting raped by horses.

That's pretty dramatically uncompelling writing. Visceral detail that can be imagined, rather than a merely uncomfortable idea, tends to be what makes people cringe. That song has less detail than a newspaper headline.

XXX Maniak is sick, but not in the same way.

When I imagine someone who is "every bone in the body is the turned the wrong way" or "elbows bent and pop"...it makes me cringe.The XXX Maniak lyrics are just psycho, not gore.

True but i have to give it to them their simple writing still works a treat.

Thanks for the advice I guess these things just have to come to you naturally and can't be forced. Some people in a local Death Metal band told me to watch some Faces of Death & real Autopsy videos, and have a few drinks first...I have access to all 3 lol. I've never really been a good writer though, I'm good with melody & rhythm, just not lyrics for some reason....can you improve on writing lyrics if you have no ability to start with? Or is it just one of those things you have to be born with

Yeah fuck it, I give up lol....it's SO hard to come up with ideas, and even when I do get one, it's so hard to piece shit together. I guess you have to be born a writer, I don't think it's something you can develop.

Well, don't sell yourself short either. Sometimes the author thinks their own writing is crap when others think it's pretty cool. You know the old adage about being one's own worst critic? It's that idea. It's hard to force inspiration without it seeming forced. If you get a snippet here and there hang onto them to be developed later on.
There are natural writers and musicians, but it doesn't hurt to dabble and you might get a foothold and really take off. I write better than I play, but it doesn't stop me from playing.
If you don't want to post something here, pm me with something and I'll have a look at it if you like. That's an open invitation to anyone that wants comments.
