Serana Arpeggios

I just picked up the powertab for this. I have the first lick down. I'm pretty new to sweeping and I seen Jason play this so I thought what the fuck, I'll learn it. It's probably the hardest thing I've ever tried to do, but I can already tell that in about 3 months when I can play the entire thing at about 100bpm it will be a great thing to show off with.

Has anyone else here tried to really push the limits of their playing with songs like this?

Yeah

With Psycroptic songs ( I always learn and improve the most after getting some psycroptic riffs down)

and My personal worst enemy, and more in relation to your thread; Trolls in the Dark by Rhapsody. I got about the first 5 sweeps of that down now. Its good with stuff like this because youve got something to aim for, unlike just a normal shredding solo. And it sounds sweet, and unlike solos, people can pick out melodies and even if they dont like metal, they like what you are playin.

Its hard, but great practice. Ive been practicing it for months now, on and off. I had a bash at it last year but gave up cuz I couldnt do the first rolling sweep.

It really does push you. I dont think Ill ever write music like this though.

I agree, I have tried writing some necrophagist-ish stuff and it just comes out generic and weak. Still, it's good to be able to apply things like this to your music.

Thats because Necrophagist is generic and weak.

Serrana* is tough. When I learned it I could play it but not near that clean at full speed and I never learned it past a certain point.

They're damn good musicians though, but I kind of agree. I really like some of their songs though.

As long as you have done those particular sweep patterns before, its not too hard.Whenever I tried something too hard,I never got good at it,I just got stuck in a rut.

Thats because difficult things take effort and you basically start in a rut when attempting a difficult task. It takes time, effot, and patience or else you'll never progress.

It took me a very long time to grasp sweep picking properly. I started getting into sweeps in January, and couldn't even play them until about a month ago. With Serana I'm still in a rut, but I'm willing to keep playing it.

woa fuckl that guy is good, looks so fluent and relaxed, doesnt even look like his fuckin fingers are moving.

I tried learning serrana, but it got a bit hard when it came to the 5 string sweeps on the 19th fret, i just cant get my fucking hand in there, doesnt help i have really fucking small fingers. I always wanted to have a go on a neckthru and see wat its like though.

Trying Serrana after a month of sweeping probably isn't going to go too well.

The best bit is how he says "SCHWEEEP!"

Ace playing, it looks mimed, though I'm sure it isn't and is just a case of the fluency. I was really pleased to hear the backing etc contributing to a melodic piece of 'schweepink' rather than the shite by that Francesco Fearari guy. I wonder if he plays that piano in the background too?

Serrana is quite difficult to play, but I for one don't think it's worth the effort of learning, unless you count only the fact of the technique, but musically it's not interesting or "beautiful" etc as many pretentious guitar fans label it, in my opinion

Oh to answer the thread... After a year or so of playing I tried to learn the tapping in 'Sea of Lies' by that shite band symphony x... Three years later and I can do it now, though not quite the same... hah!

I'm learning the go off Arpeggio interlude right now. I got the first 2 bars of Serrana down, but it's really slow. I am just trying to get it as clean as possible. And yeah, I'm spending alot of time with this, it's like a homework assignment. I'll post clips of it as soon as I finish playing it.

Just google it, it's easy enough to find. I have three versions of it.

Well to be fair, Im having a hard time tracking it down in powertab form. Any links I find, lead to dead tab sites...

edit: For the guy who wanted the tab, I did manage to find a guitar pro version on soulseek. Ill up it here if anyone wants it, but I must clarify its not my work or transcription

Second edit: and fuck it. thats way too hard for me to play at that speed.

I can play the whole thing now but very slowly and very sloppy. But still, I spend 2 hours a day playing this every day. It's only a matter of time really.

I learned the orchestral Serrana from Perspective a few years ago, but I always skipped the arpeggio parts. I'll try to go back and work on them now that I've been doing a lot of sweep stuff.
