Calm metal, on the double
Right, you represent the largest bunch of self proclaimed metal heads that I have any contact with, and as such you now have a splendid opportunity to help me out in a project.
You can do this by A) Answering the question/s below directly or B) Answer indirectly by saying stuff like dickhead, moron, use the search engine, yat-yat-yat, there goes some server kilobytes, you know the fucking drill.
Now, I need metal songs, and I need calm metal. I.E. I'm more after beauty and might than energy and rage, but still decidedly metal. If you know any, I would be very grateful for letting me know. If you don't know any, please don't post to say so, or do post to say so and then indulge me by throwing yourself into a gorge.
Finally, the treat. I might just say (well alright - write) what I'm going to use them for.

Orphaned Land is quite relaxing.
While Heaven Wept, the song Sorrow of the Angels is also calm.
most Doom Metal is, by definition, calm, as it is not fast nor chaotic and even less, complex.

My sense of calm and listenable is pretty distorted, since I listen to pretty much everything. But what comes to mind is:
Rage - Reflections of a Shadow
Judas Priest - Almost any
Scorpions - Any
Iron Maiden - 7th Son
I hope this helps, but then again I'm not completely sure what you are looking for. Give some examples maybe?

The only Doom I have is Dream Death, and I like it. Maybe I should get some other stuff.

Crowbar. They're slower songs are pretty calm, while still being metal. The Lasting Dose and When Planets Collide are two of my favorites that I consider calm...

Down has some calmer metal songs as well. I personally like Stone the Crow and Lifer, but those arent the only calm metal songs on their first album.

I would never consider either of those two songs calm... but yes, they have some calm stuff.

Some of you goons have a funny idea what 'calm' means. Judas Priest? Seventh Son? Fuck.
Orphaned Land is good, get Mabool (calmer than the earlier stuff) or The Calm Before The Flood (acoustic).
Nightwish or knock-off bands like Leaves' Eyes.
Amorphis, especially Eclipse.
Green Carnation - anything at all.
Any number of the folk-ish metal bands.

Asunder. Really good doom with a cello player.
Also as some already said "doom," look more toward "Funeral Doom." It is much more relazing than traditional doom.
Examples:
Until Death Overtakes Me
Skepticism
Funeral
Shape of Despair
Drone Doom can also do the trick.
Examples:
Sunn O)))
Earth

You just made my morning, everyone. Yes FBS, Nightwish is pretty on the spot with some of their songs; problem was that I have all five of their albums and wanted MORE.
And you guys gave it to me. I'm much obliged. Now, let me present a bunch of them to my partner and then, on Tuesday I think, I'll know if I am at liberty to say what we're going to use them for.

No we can't. Plus there's a good chance that none of the words or phrases you suggested would be require calm metal. You can flat out fuck with straight up metal.

are you looking for whole calm albums? or just albums with a good number of calm songs? Here are calm albums:
Summoning. not the first album, its raw, and its black. that would be Lugburz. the second, Minas Morgul is slower, but still not "calm". Dol Gulder is calm, and so are the others there after. Stronghold is calm, and very epic. I can guarantee you a calm and epic listen from Stronghold and Let the Mortal Heroes Sing Your Fame. The new album, Oathbound, is probably similar, though i havnt heard it.
Theatre of Tragedy. first two albums. i dont know about the rest, so im not saying anything about them.
Amorphis, like the others said.
I could say a lot more if i were more clear on how calm, and if it had to be the whole album.

I like people like you, and this kind of extrovert manifestations of yours. It really brightens up the life of your fellow man.
Now, for my question:
What the bloody-fucking-mammoth-turd are you trying to tell me?
And Walpurgis... this might very well be one of those moments when lack language knowledge make a person seem stupid, but are you implying that I should be asking you for tips on music that will help me get laid?
If such be the case, I shall forgive you only on the basis that we have never met.
Mm mm, Paradise Lost, While heaven wept, Amporphis, Theatre of tragedy, and Fuck my waning memory... this was a really great and helpful turnout.

What the shit are you talking about man? I was addressing the whole "liberty to say what we're going to use it for" line, or whatever it was you said before I posted last. Don't read too much into what I say, I don't usually imply things with my posts, takes more brainpower than I'm willing to use.

Why is it that we metal heads always consider ourselves having wierd minds?
Yea, that made sense. It made FBS-sense. Sheit.
Well, I guess I might make it official now since I seem to have managed to launch this little project along its way.
Working with a teacher of mine I'm going to drag the art of show dancing, kicking and screaming if needs be, into the world of metal. No really, we are getting this to work. Expect me to come again for suggestions on all kinds of specific types of metal. And I am selective, so don't bother try to sort out "the best", just do what you always do, that is name what you like, and I'll be happy very, over here.
A great day. This idea has been rosting slowly over a lazy fire for over a year.

have you heard Apocalyptica, i have the album "Cult". Try the songs "path" and "hope". those should be useful for what your explaining. but damn, i dont know if that could be called metal...
from Mithotyn try "in a time of tales" or "lost in the mist". really, it would work, and its metal.
from Embraced, try the outro on the album Within.
Cadacross, At the heart of night.
and i can add more if the songs can have growls or screams. in other words, metal vocals. none of the above do, those are instrumental.

Aw, darn it! I was all set to post that I knew what it was being used for and you already told part.
I was thinking Opeth and Apocalyptica, but they've been mentioned. I'll go through some of my stuff later when I get the headphones off the tractor. My pc speakers sound like crap for some reason. I was listening to Motown hits on my tape player the other day mowing. You know how it goes.

Yea, I guess, though I often prefer singing myself at those times. There's always a chance of getting a comment from a neighbour. Oh well.
At is seems now, I've managed to row "Know why the nightingale sings" safely into harbour, but I don't mind any of you filling up with as many suggestions as you like. If nothing else I like the music.

Several years ago when one of my kids said they could hear me singing "Faceless Man" by Creed at the house when I was in the back field I toned it down a bit.

Coming from you, that's a most unwelcome warmth in an already sadisticly hot weather. And no, no poon, at least not directly in conjunction with this. It's too damn hot here.
And I took a look at Funerary Dirge, not altogether impossible, although more melody and less industry is my tune.

Judas Priest - Almost any

That ain't Priest (Unless thats a cover song)
Songs for calmness:
Judas Priest - Turn On Your Light (Amazing calm song with good solo)
Judas Priest - Close To You
Judas Priest - Lost And Found
Judas Priest - Prisoner Of Your Eyes
Dragonforce - Starfire
Please listen to those and tell me if they are calm or not. Starfire is probably way too calm/soothing for you lol.
Or post a song that you mean so I can search through gigabytes of my library to help you.

hi derr, ive wanted to form a band with the calm mellow-ish vibes of a perfect circle, maybe some meaningful lyrics, and a hard screaming voice to lead it but im the only singer i trust not to become a total control freak, and the only guitarist i know who wants unity in the music instead of a breif moment in the spotlight, and uhh... well im the only bassist i know.
and i cant do all three, no, thats not true, i dont want to do all three.
but to be frank, even though im tedd, i lack faith in this idea

I can't believe no-one has mentioned Madder Mortem? (well maybe someone did, didnt look at all ).
I actually saw their 3 albums in JB Hifi, which is quite an achievement. Check em out, relaxing doomy /melodic metal, with a female singer.

Interesting to see how this thread is kept alive very much without my interference. Seems like there is a theeming need for calm stuff among all those iron faced head bangers.
OK, so I fell into the glam trap and put The final countdown on the table; that kind of songs have also turned out to work well. And I bloody well learned it too, so this is getting seriously out of hand. However, my point with telling you this in the first place, is that even songs like that might be interesting for me.
And though I can't remember them all top of my head, your many suggestions have given me a lot of appreciated listening time; why don't you check out the ones mentioned in this thread that you don't know.
