Out of tune bass strings!
Hello dear metal heads
Haven't been on here in ages. Anyway I got a query.
My guitar always becomes flat or sharp after I start playing it in the bass strings (d,a,e) and my treble strings always stay in perfect tune.
Why is that? How can I make my bass strings always stay in tune without it going flat or sharp? Why do the treble strings always stay in tune? What do you people do to make your guitar stay in tune?
Thank you

How old are the strings?
your machine heads could be a bit worn out and loosening on their own.
a few other factors but those are the most likely causes that ive come across.
What kind of guitar is it anyways? If its some cheapo then theres really nothing i can say that will help you.

Has it got a tremelo? Try replacing the strings, or if they are new, they do need to wear in a bit so they go out of tune for a while - shouldnt be too bad though. Check your machine heads

Is it a Floyd guitar or a string through?
There are a few ways to help stabilise tuning on both systems.

the bass strings (e a d) are wound strings, therefore they stretch more
the treble stings are plain, they stretch less
dont ask em y, they just do
old strings detune alot and fast, but new strings aswell.
after ive put new strings on my guitar i always stretch them a bit, doing some bends etc, on all the strings, i do that bout 3 or 4 times and then tune, and that seems to work pretty good to keep my strings in tune.

My guitar is not a cheap ordinary one (why would you think I would have a cheap guitar, music is very important for me) It is a professional ESP explorer. The machine heads are not worn out because the guitar is pretty new and I take care of my guitar a lot. Anyway since you brought that up, if that is the case how the hell can you fix that? No my guitar does not have a tremolo and it is a fixed bridge string through, not floyd bridge. How can you stabilize string through systems? The strings I changed them around a week ago and they are still almost new because I don't sweat and I clean them always after use. Wow that is a surprise I never knew e,a,d are wound strings and the treble strings e,b,g are plain. That has to be a major factor than.
I stretched my guitar strings upward and tuned my guitar. I kept on doing this process until it stayed in tune after stretching my string. That seemed to keep my bass strings in tune, but than I got frustrated again. Every time the AC turns on my strings for some very weird reason become flat or sharp!! Why in the name of hell does that happen! So than I moved my playing position to a different place in the room were the AC does not hit me and my guitar, and guess what, my guitar never got out of tune after that! Basically what fixed my tuning problem was stretching the strings and moving away from the AC wind. Does anyone have an explanation for the AC thing, and does that happen to anyone here?
It is so angering realizing and admitting that all the songs I did before were always recorded sharp or flat the guitar parts because I never checked the tuning after I started playing. I got to solve this problem now or I'll never be able to sleep! I spent so much effort recording a new song and I have to do it over now because I don't want it to be flat or sharp.
Thank you!

The AC will adjust the humidity (and obviously temperature) in the room, which will affect the metals and the woods that build up a guitar, moving it to a more stabalised environment will cure the issue as you have found

Who cares? As long as the recording you did sounds good, it doesn't matter.

Yeah, things tend to expand and contract when the temperature changes. Most old houses get creaky during the night for that reason.
After you change your strings, play for about a half an hour and just beat them up a little bit. Palm mutes, heavy bends, stuff like that.

Temperature and humidity will change greatly near an air conditioner. It is a good ideal to keep you guitar in a case when not in use to maintain a slow changing temperature and humidity around the guitar. Before you play it is good to retune it, play for an hour and retune as needed to adjust the guitar to the new temperature and humidity.
Basically you can count on extreme temperature and humidity changes to make keeping a guitar in tune a living hell. The key to consistent tuning is light air conditioning, keeping the strings new clean and stretched, keeping it in the case when not in use and not changing you tuning key. A guitar will settle in time to a specific tuning but it might take a few years. It is a new guitar so that could be part of the problem.

I think it really depends on what is shrinking or expanding here ....
If the neck shrinks, wouldn't that be like relieving tension on the strings, thus making it flat?
And same for expansion -> more tension-> sharper notes.
Also being Canadian, I once had the unique experience of playing in a heated tent in the dead of winter (February) at something we have here called the "Festival du Voyageur". The problem with a heated tent is that you have these huge heater fans blowing in hot air but cold creeping in from the walls and the doors of the tent so the air is in constant flux. After about two songs of playing you'd be a good quarter step out of tune .... and not in unison with the rest of the detuned guitars ....

I suppose I should have been more specific...
I was referring to the strings, not the neck. I have found that in hotter, more humid environments, my bass goes flat, and in colder ones, it goes sharp.

I've also experienced this, but it was in a club in France. The "backstage" area was a curtained off corner with a red par-can for lighting...everyone's equipment was so out of tune (flat) the tech's were going crazy trying to get shit tuned for the bands...perhaps this is one of the (many many) reasons I despise Paris so much...
Cheers.
